Warhawks Split to Open 2011

The Warhawk softball team, ranked thirteenth in a National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll, fell to eighth ranked Messiah College 2-0 in Clermont, Florida Friday. UW-W defeated Babson College in the first game of the twinbill Friday morning.

The lead-off batter for Messiah reached on an error in the bottom of the second and then came around to score on a Warhawk error later in the inning. Messiah struck again in the bottom of the fourth with one more run crossing the plate. Both runs were unearned.

Warhawk righty Katie Boyle (Greendale/Thomas More) picked up the loss in her first game of the season. Boyle allowed four hits in six innings pitched while striking out six and walking two.

Falcon pitcher Jessica Rhodes kept her streak alive picking up the complete game win and improving to 4-0 on the season. The righty struck out 12 and walked two in the complete game win. Rhodes hasn't given up a hit so far in 2011.

Whitewater will continue play in Clermont Saturday with games against Keene State and Hamline at 8:30 and 12:30 respectively.
 
Babson Recap
After six scoreless innings, the UW-W softball team, ranked thirteenth in a National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll, used a three hit sixth inning to take a 1-0 lead over Babson in Clermont, Florida.

Haley Krueger (Beach Park, IL/Waukegan) doubled to center field with one out and moved to second on a single from Amanda Mertes (Des Plaines, IL/Elk Grove). A Babson error loaded the bases with pinch hitter Morgan Krisch (Plainfield, IL/Central) up to bat. Krisch singled to the shortstop for an RBI scoring Krueger.

The Warhawks held Babson in the top of the seventh to record the season opening win.

Left hander Jessica Stang (Minnetonka, MN/Minnetonka) picked up the seven inning win on the mound recording six strikeouts while walking one and allowing six hits.

Whitewater is set to face Messiah at 10:30 CT in Clermont, Florida.
