For the third straight season the UW-Whitewater men's soccer team has won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title. They clinched their third crown with a 5-0 victory over Finlandia University Saturday in Whitewater. The Warhawks improve to 11-7 overall and 7-0 in the WIAC with one conference match remaining. The Lions fall to 3-9 overall and 0-6 in the WIAC.
UW-W fired off 25 first half shots to the Lions' zero. The first shot of the game came just 45 seconds after the game started. The Warhawks continued to pepper Finlandia goalkeeper Miguel Gamez with shots until they broke through in the seventeenth minute.
Logan Fye (Rockford, IL/Winnebago) headed in his eighth goal of the season to give UW-W the 1-0 lead.
Sam Kuchenreuther (Brown Deer/Brown Deer) gave the Warhawks a 2-0 advantage scoring off of a pass from
Jared Denu (Waunakee/Waunakee) in the 32nd minute and
Jonathon Fischer (Hartland/Arrowhead) made it 3-0 with a goal in the 37th minute.
Kuchenreuther struck again, notching his third goal of the season, in the 42nd minute to give the Warhawks a 4-0 lead heading into the half.
UW-W continued its dominance in the second half when, 24 seconds after missing a penalty shot,
Kevin Kron (Willowbrook, IL/Benet Academy) scored his team leading ninth goal of the season in the 68th minute to give the Warhawks a five goal advantage.
The Warhawks ended up outshooting Finlandia 37-0, 16 of the shots were on goal. UW-W also recorded 14 corner kicks while the Lions earned none. The Warhawks were whistled for offsides nine times to Finlandia's two.
Aaron Sesselmann (Green Bay/Notre Dame Academy) and
Matt Mikesell (Waukesha/Kettle Moraine) split time in the goal for UW-W. Neither net minder needed to make a save as the Lions did not shoot one time in the game. The last time a team was unable to get off a shot in a game against the Warhawks was Finlandia on September 8, 2007. The Warhawks won that game 13-0.
These two teams met back on October 12 in Hancock, Michigan with UW-W winning 8-0. The Warhawks have won five straight against the Lions and have outscored them 48-1.
UW-W has won the WIAC title in all three years that men's soccer has been a part of the conference. The first year, 2009, the Warhawks won the title outright. They shared the crown in 2010 with UW-Oshkosh. The title is again theirs alone in 2011.
The Warhawks will look to maintain their unblemished conference record in their final WIAC match against UW-Oshkosh on November 4 at 7:00 pm in Whitewater.
