Two seven-run innings propelled the 'Hawks to victory in game one. UW-W got out of the gates quickly with a leadoff double by
Jordan Stine (Merrill/Merrill ). The next six batters reached base before UW-Superior could record an out. UW-W batted around in the inning as they went on to take a 7-0 lead.
Superior got three back in the bottom of the third but the Warhawks notched seven more in the top of the fourth to extend their lead to 14-3. The Warhawks batted around again in that inning and recorded six straight singles after the leadoff batter was retired. The Warhawks also pulled off a double steal in the inning when Stine stole second and
Nick Rechlitz (Milwaukee/Marquette) stole home.
Another run by Superior in the bottom of the fourth made it 14-4 but UW-W pulled out to a 15-4 lead on a sacrifice fly by
Tim Conroy (Barrington, IL/Barrington) in the top of the sixth. Two more Superior runs in the bottom of the sixth made it 15-6 but the 'Hawks took those two runs back in the top of the second on a pinch-hit double by
Travis Wessels (Tomah/Tomah) that plated
Brandon Egnarski (Watertown/Watertown) and
David Cladis (Joliet, IL/Joliet Catholic).
The Yellowjackets scored one in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to get within ten as the game ended early due to the ten-run differential rule.
Jason Hooper (Lake Mills/Lake Mills) recorded the victory in game one and is now 5-2 this season. Hooper scattered seven hits across five and two-thirds while striking out two.
Game two saw the Warhawks fall behind 1-0 after two innings but two runs in the top of the fourth and two more in the top of the sixth gave UW-W a 4-1 lead.
A five-run eighth, thanks to a two-run double by Stine and a three-run homer by
Jeff Donovan (Wauwatosa/East), gave the 'Hawks an eight run cushion. A sacrifice fly by Cladis in the top of the ninth gave UW-W a 10-1 advantage heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Superior fought back with three runs in the last inning but was unable to overcome the Warhawk lead and were swept for the second straight day.
Riley Tincher (Oregon/Oregon) pitched seven and a third, scattering four hits and one run before giving way to
Tom Kerndt (Lansing, IA/Lansing) in the eighth. Tincher struckout eleven en route to the victory and is 11-0 this season.
