#15 'Hawks Lose Two to Yellowjackets

The women's softball team saw a nine game winning streak come to an end at the hands of host UW-Superior on Saturday.  The 'Jackets defeated the 'Hawks 2-1 and 15-9 to remain undefeated in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  UW-Whitewater, ranked 15th in the latest American Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 Poll, falls to 18-8 overall and 6-2 in the WIAC.

Game one was a low scoring affair with UW-Superior getting on the board first with one run in the bottom of the third.  UW-W knotted the score in the top of the sixth when Lauren Cruz (Des Plaines, IL/Maine West) hit a solo homerun to center field.

Things remained tied until the bottom of the seventh when 'Jackets centerfielder Taylor VanDamme hit a walk-off single that scored Britnee Blake.

Jessica Stang (Minnetonka, MN/Minnetonka) pitched a solid game scattering seven hits and striking out eight for the Warhawks.  Her opposition just had a better day at the mound giving up only three hits in the game.

Game two featured more action on the bases with a total of 24 runs being scored in the game.  The 'Hawks, perhaps chomping at the bit to get some runs, scored four in the top of the first to take the early lead.  Amanda LeBeau (Worth, IL/Richards) and Emily Epifanio (Park Ridge, IL/Maine South) each hit a two-run homer in the inning.

Superior responded with three in the bottom half of the first and another three in the bottom of the second to take a 6-4 lead.  They padded their lead with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth.

The 'Hawks got two back in the top of the fifth when Cruz singled in a pair, but the 'Jackets notched four in the bottom half of the frame to go up 12-6.

UW-W mounted a comeback in the top of the sixth scoring on a passed ball, a walk, and another Cruz single, but UW-Superior answered with three of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

Cruz had a monster day at the plate going 5-for-8 with four RBIs and two runs scored.  Cruz has eight multiple RBI games this season.  Both LeBeau and Shauna Binsfeld (Cedarburg/Grafton) saw five-game hitting streaks come to an end.

Katie Boyle (Greendale/Thomas More) took the loss for the Warhawks and falls to 3-4 as a starter this season.

UW-W will look to bounce back tomorrow as they travel to UW-Eau Claire for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
