UW-Whitewater opened the home portion of the 2010 schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Carroll University, winning 4-3 and 7-2 Wednesday at van Steenderen Field.

Game One Notes
After two scoreless innings Carroll broke through with three runs in the top of the third. The Pioneers got a boost from UW-W, with the frame beginning with a hit batter and a Warhawk error. That was followed by a sacrifice and a two out RBI single by Tessa Boushley, an RBI double from Christine Roggemann, with the third run coming in on a single by Maggie Shaffer.
Whitewater came back with their four runs in the game in the bottom half of the inning. Designated hitter
Amanda Mertes (Des Plaines, IL/Elk Grove) reached on an error, stole second and advanced on third on a sacrifice. Shortstop
Amanda LeBeau (Worth, IL/Richards) singled in the first run, leftfielder
Lauren Cruz (Des Plaines, IL/Maine West) singled, and catcher
Emily Epifanio (Park Ridge, IL/Maine South) clubbed a three run homer.
Senior righthander Stacey Bahr pitched the last four innings to pick up the win for the Warhawks. Bahr gave up four hits, walked one and struck out four in picking up her second win of the year. LeBeau and Cruz led the offense with two hits, while Shaffer went 3-4 for the Pioneers.
Game Two Notes
The second game started like the first, with two scoreless innings.
Whitewater opened the scoring in the third when Mertes tripled and pinch-hitter
Alli Driscoll (Beloit/F.J. Turner) singled her in. Cruz homered to open the fourth inning, upping the margin to 2-0.
Carroll tied the game with a pair of runs in the fifth. Mandy Mlodzik singled, followed by an Amanda Strutz single, and they were sacrificed up one base. Shaffer brought in the first run with a sacrifce fly and advanced Strutz, and Nicki Leden doubled in Strutz.
UW-W responded with two of its own in the bottom of the fifth. Cruz singled, Epifanio doubled to bring in Cruz, and second baseman
Kate McDonnell (Aurora, IL/West Aurora) brought Epifanio home with another double, making it 4-2 Whitewater.
Three Whitewater runs in the six ended the scoring. Rightfielder
Shauna Binsfeld (Cedarburg/Grafton) doubled and moved to third on a passed ball. Mertes walked, and LeBeau cleared the bases with her second home run of the season.
Cruz went 3x4 for UW-W. Carroll had five hits, no one with more than one.
Freshman righthander
Sammy Kessler (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) went the distance, after
Brittany LeBeau (Worth, IL/Richards) walked the first batter, to pick up her first collegiate win. Kessler scattered five hits, did not allow an earned run, walked four and struck out four.
Misc.
UW-W is 9-5 this season. Carroll is 4-8.
Whitewater will play at the University of Chicago Friday. The next home contests for UW-W will be Tuesday at 3:00 with UW-Oshkosh visiting van Steenderen Field on the north end of campus.
