The UW-Whitewater softball team fell to 3-3 on the season with a 7-1 loss to Eastern Connecticut State on Sunday in Clermont, Florida. Whitewater trailed 4-1 after the first five and a third innings before a rain delay postponed the final two innings until six hours later.
Box score
UW-W fell behind early in the first inning when a couple of errors led to two Eastern Connecticut runs.
The 'Hawks answered back with one run in the bottom of the first when
Courtney Baldwin (Spring Grove, IL/Richmond-Burton) scored on a wild pitch. That would be all of the offense for UW-W in the game as Eastern Connecticut added one in the top of the fourth and one in the top of the sixth with one out before the rain delay.
After returning from the rain delay things didn't improve for Whitewater. A bases clearing triple upon resuming play essentially put the game out of reach for the Warhawks.
Amanda Mertes (Des Plaines, IL/Elk Grove) and Baldwin each recorded two hits in the game while
Lauren Cruz (Des Plaines, IL/Maine West) and
Shauna Binsfeld (Cedarburg/Grafton) added one apiece.
Five UW-Whitewater errors contributed to Eastern Connecticuts seven runs on just six hits.
Jessica Stang (Minnetonka, MN/Minnetonka) went the distance for UW-W and had a solid performance if not for the errors. Stang struck out twelve while giving up six hits and four earned runs.
UW-W will return to the diamond in Winterhaven on Tuesday, March 23 for a game against Western Connecticut.
