UW-W Tops Chicago in Battle of Ranked Teams

In what may be a decisive game when National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III bids are announced later this month, UW-Whitewater, ranked seventh in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III Central Region poll, defeated the University of Chicago, ranked sixth in the NSCAA III Central Region, 2-1 Sunday afternoon in Chicago.

Luke Mangognia (Hoffman Estates, IL/Palatine) put UW-W in front, kicking it his third goal of the year from point blank range in front of the goal at 28:18.  He was assisted by Zach Rewasiewicz (South Milwaukee/South Milwaukee).  The half ended with that lone goal.

Both teams exchanged late game heroics.  First Stanton Coville took a pass from Rashad Masri to convert his eighth goal of the season and tie the match at 1-1 at 85:34.  As the thought of overtime loomed, Dan Montanye (Mukwonago/Mukwonago) fed Luke Buchholz (Whitewater/Whitewater), and Buchholz netted the ball from twenty yards right of the goal for the game winner.

Buchholz's goal was his team leading eleventh of the season.  Eleven goals ties him for eighth in the UW-W single season record book with Ryan Hartberg (1997) and Aaron Rowley (2002).  Buchholz, a junior, has 29 career goals, fourth all-time at UW-W.  Next in sight on the list, at number three, is Chris Logan (1992-95) with 32.

Chicago had more shots than Whitewater, with six in each half to Whitewater's total of eight.  Warhawk goalie Andrew Krueger (New Berlin/Catholic Memorial) had six saves.

UW-W, 9-5-3, has won five of its last six matches.  Chicago is 10-3-2.

Whitewater will host Northwood International University Tuesday at 7:00 at Robert W. Fiskum Field on campus in the regular season home finale.  The regular season will conclude November 7 at UW-Oshkosh.
