The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's track and field team kicked off the 2024 outdoor season at the First Chance Invitational hosted by North Central College in Naperville, Illinois Thursday and Friday.
Tina Shelton (Janesville, Wis./Parker) paced the Warhawks with three top three finishes including a pair of golds. Shelton posted the top time of 11.99 in the 100. Teammate
Jacqueline Kornowski (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) was sixth in the event with a clocking of 12.57. Shelton added a second gold in the 200 crossing the line in 24.66 and a bronze in the javelin with a toss of 36.51 meters.
In the 400,
Katie McNamara (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) and
Abby Giese (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail) finished back-to-back in fourth and fifth with times of 1:00.80 and 1:01.23 respectively.
Three Warhawks finished among the top eight in the 1,500 led by
Payton Scoggin's (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trails) time of 5:03.36.
Jocelyn Ramirez (Jefferson, WI/) crossed the line in 5:12.27 to finish seven while
Emma Shingledecker (New Berlin, Wis./West) was eighth with a time of 5:12.63.
Lena Becker (Toulon, Ill./Stark County) was the top UWW hurdler in the 100 hurdles. Her time of 15.76 was sixth at the meet.
In the field events, the Warhawks dominated in the pole vault.
Gracie Holland (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) led the way with the top height at the meet, 3.80 meters.
Zoe Jenks-Recker (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) and
Ella Maher (Rockford, Ill./Winnebago) tied for second with height of 3.35 meters and
Malerie Morey (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) was seventh (3.05 meters).
Holland added a runner-up finish in the long jump with a leap of 5.35 meters.
Brynn Fuerstenberg (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) secured bronze in the high jump with a height of 1.53 meters.
Lexie Weier (Mineral Point, WI) wrapped up the jumpers in the top eight with a fifth place leap of 10.38 meters in the triple jump.
Kenni Czarnecki (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) placed among the top eight in the hammer and discus. Her hammer throw toss of 48.55 meters was fourth while a heave of 36.98 meters in the discus was good for seventh.
