The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater bowling team claimed the title at the Valpo Bowling Classic in Valparaiso, Indiana this weekend. The Warhawks topped Division I University of Maryland Eastern Shore twice Sunday to secure the championship.
The Warhawks opened the tournament with a 3-2 record over five Baker games Friday. With a total pinfall of 4,522, UWW held second on the team leaderboard after day one.
The second day of competition consisted of traditional team games. The UWW went 3-1 with a total pinfal of 9152 - just five pins behind the leader, UMES.
Kelly Whipple (Sheboygan, Wis./South) paced the Warhawks with a total pinfall of 1007 - an average of 201.40 in five games - to finish as the individual runner-up.
Kayla Devine () secured third with an average of 198.80 and a total pinfall of 994.
Dani Swaisgood (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) added another top ten finisher for UWW with five-game total of 932.
Zoey Darwin (Monona, Wis./Monona Grove) also bowled all five traditional games for the Warhawks finishing 17th with a total of 858.
For their performances, Whipple and Devine were named to the Valpo Bowling Classic All-Tournament Team.
As the number two seed heading into championship Sunday, UW-Whitewater opened with a Baker series against UMES in the first round. The Warhawks won the series 4-1 to earn a spot in the championship match.
UMES battled their way back to the championship to force a rematch. Once again, the Warhawks came out on top taking five games in the best-of-seven series.
