The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team is represented by seven Warhawks on the 2023 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Teams. All-league honorees include
Maddy Anderson (Waukesha, Wis./North),
Brooke Hock (Green Bay, Wis./Preble),
Taylor Koehler (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda) and
Kiarra Kostroski (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson).
Meghan Dunning (Plainfield, Ill./South) and
Grace Wickman (Wausaukee, Wis./Peshtigo) were honorable mention picks and
Mallory Hollatz (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) was selected to the All-Sportsmanship Team.
Hock, a freshman righty, has been dominant in the circle this season holding opposing hitters to a batting average of just .147, the lowest in the WIAC. Despite having just over 50 innings of work in, she has 12 wins and 5 saves. Hock led the league in earned run average at 0.86, a mark that is second in Division III this season and is currently ninth in WIAC history for ERA in a single season. Her five saves is also second-most in the nation and tied for ninth in the league record books. This season, Hock allowed the fewest hits, fewest runs and fewest earned runs (7) of any pitcher in the WIAC. She's ranked third nationally allowed just three hits per seven innings pitched.
Anderson, a fellow right-hander in the circle, claims her first All-WIAC honors in her first season as a Warhawk as a graduate transfer. Anderson led the league in strikeouts looking with 49. She ranked third in earned run average (1.47) and opposing batting average (.213) while recording the fourth-most strikeouts (111) in over 100 innings in the circle. Her six wins is a top 15 mark in the league this season.
Koehler, a freshman first baseman and designated player, has impressed with her bat all season. Starting 32 of 35 games played this season, Koehler led UWW with a .392 batting average, seventh-best in the league. Her .439 on base percentage was ninth of all hitters in the WIAC. For the season, she posted 40 hits, 7 doubles, a triple and a homerun for 20 RBI - all top four marks for the Warhawks in 2023. Defensively, Koehler holds a .971 fielding percentage inn 207 chances.
Kostroski, a sophomore outfielder/catcher, registered top 15 marks in the WIAC in walks (15), doubles (8), homeruns (3) and RBI (22). She hit .309 starting 36 games for UWW this season leading the Warhawks in runs scored (24) and at bats (110) with the second-most hits on the team (34). Defensively, Kostroski erred just twice in 149 chances for a fielding percentage of .987.
Now a three-time All-WIAC selection, Dunning, is one of the leaders on defense at the shortstop position. The junior was an all-league pick last season and earned honorable mention honors in 2021, as well as this season. She boasted top ten marks in triples (2) and homeruns (5) in the WIAC this season. For the Warhawks, Dunning started all 37 games for UWW this season leading the squad in homeruns while hitting .234 in 107 at bats. She drove in 19 runs while scoring 17 so far in 2023.
Wickman, a sophomore third baseman, registered the sixth-most doubles for hitters in the conference with 12. Her two triples tied for ninth while her .540 slugging percentage is 12th. Wickman led the team in total bases (54), was second on the team in runs scored (23), third in hits (32), third in walks drawn (10) and third in batting average (.320). Wickman startedd 35 games for UWW so far this season.
Hollatz, a senior right-handed pitcher, represented UWW on the WIAC's All-Sportsmanship Team this season. Appearing in seven games, Hollatz posted a 1-1 record in the circle in 15.0 innings of work.
UW-Whitewater claimed the program's 15th WIAC regular season title this season before finishing third in the conference tournament. The 26-11 Warhawks received an at-large bid into the 2023 NCAA Division III Tournament and will host a regional beginning Thursday. UWW opens regional action against Spalding Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at the van Steendered Softball Complex.
