The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team split a twinbill with UW-Stevens Point on the road Friday afternoon. The Warhawks dropped the opener 10-8 before taking the nightcap 11-10.
The Warhawks opened the high scoring opener as UWW capitalized on a Pointer miscue to plate the first run of the game in the top of the second. UWSP responded with a three-spot in the bottom fo the third and held the lead the rest of the way.
Facing a 7-2 deficit in the eighth, UW-Whitewater rallied to cut the margin to just one.
Adam Cootway (DePere, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) registered a RBI groundout to spark the run.
Alex Najera (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) followed with a RBI single to left field before
Sam Paden (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) drove in two more on a double to center to make it 7-6.
The Pointers added three in the bottom of the frame to build a four-run cushion.
Matt Scolan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) and
Matt Korman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) led UWW at the plate with a pair of hits each in the game. Both of Scolan's were for extra bases including a double and homerun.
Donovan Brandl (Rudolph, Wis./Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln) got the start and took the loss allowing four runs in four innings of work.
The second game of the doubleheader had a plethora of offense packed into just a few innings.
UWW got the game going with a five-spot in the top of the first.
Jacob DeMeyer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) sparked the run with a one-out single. He swiped second and Brandl walked. With two outs, the Warhawks rallied With back-to-back singles from Cootway and Paden. Najera made it three straight hits with a three-run blast to right center that gave UWW a 5-0 lead.
The Pointers responded with nine runs on five hits with the help of one Warhawk miscue in the bottom of the frame.
UW-Whitewater worked their way back into the game with a pair of runs in the third to make it 9-7. UWSP added one more in the bottom of the sixth to extend the gap to 10-7.
The Warhawks reclaimed the lead in the seventh. Cootway led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Paden took one for the team and both stole the next base on a strikeout. A wild pitch and Pointer error plated the first two runs of the frame. Scolan, DeMeyer and Brandl registered three consecutive singles to bring in two more and reclaim the advantage for UWW 11-10.
UW-Stevens Point threatened in the ninth advancing a runner into scoring position but the Warhawks got out of the jam.
DeMeyer, Cootway and Paden were phenomenal at the plate for UW-Whitewater combining for 13 of the Warhawks' 19 hits while accounting for nine of the teams runs in the game.
Logan Eisenbarth (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) picked up the win on the mound for UWW. In six innings of work, he struck out six allowing a single earned run. Paden came in for the final out to pick up the save.
