The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's bowling team finished fourth in a field of 20 teams at the Flyer Classic hosted by Lewis University in Lockport, Illinois Sunday.
The Flyer Classic opened Friday with Baker matches. The Warhawks won all six of their matches on day one including a 978-938 win over Central Missouri, 1,002-832 rout of North Central, 953-883 victory over Carthage, 1,060-811 domination of Belmont Abbey College and UWW capped the day with a 980-845 win over Quincy.
UW-Whitewater went 4-1 in traditional team matches Saturday. The Warhawks opened with a 1,040-916 win over Marian. UWW bounced back from a 905-945 loss to Newman with a 1,047-939 win over Augustana College. In one of the closest matches of the day, the Warhawks took down Maryville 1,023-1,010 and wrapped up the day with a 1,007-800 win over Carroll.
Rachel Nelson (Poplar Grove, Ill./Belvidere North) led the Warhawks with a fourth place finish individually leading a contingent of four representing UWW to place among the top 20. Nelson averaged 212.20 in five games and was just two pins from third place in total pinfall with 1,061.
Kelly Whipple (Sheboygan, Wis./South) averaged 208.60 to hold seventh.
Rebecca Howard (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove) and Skye Faar were 15th and 19th respectively on the individual leaderboard.
Cheyenne Tuft (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) finished among the top third (34th) in the field of 118 bowlers.
In Sunday's bracket battle, the Warhawks feel to Central Missouri in the best of seven baker series. UWW dropped the first three of the series before bouncing back with a pair of wins. Central Missouri edged the Warhawks 183-198 in the final game of the series.
UW-Whitewater responded with a win over No. 12 Newman. After a 205-205 tie in the first game, the squads split the next two. From there, UWW ran out the next three, 204-178, 180-156 and 199-152 to set up a rematch with Central Missouri in the third place match.
The Warhawks dropped the rematch with Central Missouri to finish fourth.
