The No. 20 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater bowling team finished second in the Warhawk Classic held at Dream Lanes in Madison this weekend. The Warhawks took down top-ranked Vanderbilt in the final match of the tournament but finished second on total pinfall.
The round robin tournament format consisted for seven traditional team games and seven Baker games.
UW-Whitewater was in second to Vanderbilt after the traditional games with a total pinfall of 6,828 to 7,047. UWW's only loss of the first seven was to the Commodores - 1,030 to 1,001 to wrap up the series of traditional games. The Warhawks bounced back to run through the Baker games undefeated, handing Vandy a loss in the final match of the tournament.
UWW opened Baker play with a 950-853 win over Kentucky Wesleyan before narrowly defeating Aurora 913-900. Another close one still had the Warhawks coming away with the 'W', this time by just 10 pins, 1,024-1,014 over Marian.
UW-Whitewater opened day three with a 929-752 win over Carroll followed by a 1,026-809 win over Augustana. Match 13 had UWW winning 955-781 over Elmhurst to set up the rematch with Vanderbilt.
In the final match against the Commodores, the Warhawks fivesome of
Zoey Darwin (Monona, Wis./Monona Grove),
Kelly Whipple (Sheboygan, Wis./South),
Rachel Nelson (Poplar Grove, Ill./Belvidere North),
Mackenzie Juedes (Menasha, Wis./Menasha) and
Rebecca Howard (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove) upset the top-ranked team in the nation 1,035-997.

Four Warhawks finished among the top 10 individually. Juedes was second to the top scorer from Vandy with a tournament average of 207.7. Nelson registered an average of 198, Howard came in at 194.57 and Whipple averaged 191.14 for fourth, seventh and ninth respectively.
