The Warhawk men's tennis team had a busy day of competition in the Firebird Challenge: Battle of the Birds hosted by Carthage College.
Results
Teams faced off in a flighted format with three athletes from each team competing in one doubles and two singles matches.
The Warhawks topped Carthage in the first flight with
John Zakowski (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) and
Cole Lindwall (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) picking up singles wins 8-7(4) and 8-5 respectively. Carthage won the doubles match but UW-W took the overall win.
Flight two had UW-Whitewater sweeping North Central.
Luke VanDonslear (Marion, Iowa/Linn Mar) won 8-3 while his teammate
Tyler Nelson (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) was an 8-4 winner. The pair also took doubles against the Cardinals 8-4.
In another matchup with Carthage,
Payton Adkisson (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) and
Josh Baldwin (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) won their singles matches 8-4 and 8-2 respectively to take the flight.
Ridley Aranda (Bayside, Wis./Nicolet) and
Josh Guillermo (Muskego, Wis./Marquette University HS) defeated a NCC doubles squad 8-5 but fell in both singles matches in flight four.
Andrew Dumbauld () and
Chase Lindwall (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) registered a win over Carthage in flight five taking doubles 8-2 and Lindwall's singles matchup 8-2.
In the second round of competition, Zakowski and Lindwall swept North Central in the first flight. VanDonslear and Nelson tallied their second sweep of the day, this time over Carthage, in flight two. Flight three had another Warhawk sweep in the cards with Adkisson and Baldwin topping North Central's trio. More of the same in flight four with Aranda and Guillermo taking all three against NCC. Dumbauld and Lindwall's second round matchup came to the same conclusion as the first round in the fifth flight.
Parker Sprague also competed for the Warhawks, teaming up with Calery Fauret of Illinois Institute of Technology. Sprague won both his singles and double match in round won and his singles outing in round two.
