2021-22 USTFCCCA Division III Program of the Year Final Standings
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's cross country and track and field programs combined to finish seventh in the nation in the final 2021-22 United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division III Men's Al Carius Program of the Year Award standings.
The Warhawk men placed fifth at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in the fall, tied for 10th at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in the winter and finished 16th at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the spring. UW-W finished with 31.5 team points, just one point shy of sixth-place Wartburg (Iowa).
The men's cross country team equaled the 1999 team for the highest national finish in program history after qualifying by winning the NCAA North Regional race.
David Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger),
Christian Patzka (Black Earth, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) and
Gunner Schlender (Brillion, Wis./Brillion) each garnered All-American honors by placing among the top 35 at the meet. Fassbender swept WIAC Athlete of the Year and USTFCCCA North Region Athlete of the Year accolades, while head coach
Jeff Miller was named North Region Coach of the Year by the USTFCCCA.
The distance squad led the Warhawks to the men's track and field program's ninth top 10 finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships since 2010. Patzka, Fassbender and Schlender placed 4-5-6 in the 5,000-meter run, and Fassbender wrapped up his weekend with another All-America medal thanks to a third-place finish in the 3,000-meter run.
In field events,
Shelvin Garrett II (Beloit, Wis./Memorial) finished third in the triple jump, and
Daustin Martin (Jefferson, Wis./Jefferson) earned a spot on the All-America podium thanks to an eighth-place performance in the men's weight throw.
Three Warhawks collected All-America standing at the NCAA Outdoor Championships to lead the team to 16th place. Patzka finished as national runner-up in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while fellow distance runner
Justin Krause (Ixonia, Wis./Pewaukee) claimed his first All-America medal with fourth place in the 1,500-meter run. Garrett repeated his All-America performance with another top-five finish in the triple jump, placing fifth overall.
