Five University of Wisconsin-Whitewater teams and individuals from the Warhawk men's and women's tennis teams are represented in the latest national rankings. This week's edition of Warhawks in the Rankings is presented by Whitewater Family Dentistry.
 
Bowling
 
The Warhawks are No. 22 in the National Tenpin Coaches Association January Poll, the most recent rankings released for the 2021-22 season. UW-W was ranked fourth in the NTCA's Division II/III Preseason Poll.
 
UW-Whitewater placed sixth at the University of Nebraska's Big Red Invitational on Feb. 25-27. UW-W finished the weekend with a 4-8 record, with seven of the team's eight losses coming against top-10 ranked opponents. Sam Knab (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) led the team in traditional scoring with a 1,090 in five games, good for a 218 average and 16th place in the 64-player field.
 
The Warhawks return to action March 11-13 at the United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Sectional Qualifier at Stardust Bowl in Addison, Ill.
 
Women's Basketball
 
UW-Whitewater is 12th in both the Women's Basketball Coaches Association NCAA Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll and the D3hoops.com Top 25.
 
The Warhawks (23-4 overall), who won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season title, were defeated 77-63 against UW-Eau Claire on Feb. 25 in the conference tournament championship game. Kacie Carollo (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) tallied a team-high 14 points and Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) registered 10 points, 15 rebounds, seven assists and two blocks.
 
UW-Whitewater will host the four-team NCAA Whitewater regional this Friday and Saturday at Kachel Gymnasium. UW-W faces Ripon in the first round Friday starting at 7:30 p.m.
 
Wrestling
 
UW-Whitewater is 11th in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Coaches Dual Team Rankings and 24th in the Tournament Team Rankings. Jake Burford (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point), Jaritt Shinhoster (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Barrington) and Cadin Koeppel (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) are each ranked nationally by both the NWCA and D3wrestle.com.
 
Shinhoster is ranked fifth at 184 pounds by the NWCA and D3wrestle.com. Burford, a 149-pounder, is ninth in the weight class in both the NWCA's and D3wrestle.com's rankings, while Koeppel, a heavyweight, is ranked 10th by D3wrestle.com and 11th by the NWCA at 285 pounds.
 
Ethan Pogorzelski (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls), a 133-pounder, Tommy Hoy (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel Catholic), a 165-pounder, and Ryan Vedner (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect), a 174-pounder, are listed in the "Contender" category in the D3wrestle.com rankings. Dakarai Clay (Madison, Wis./Madison East) is listed in the "Honorable Mention" section at 141 pounds.
 
Shinhoster and Burford each qualified for the upcoming NCAA Championship last weekend at the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional in Eau Claire. Shinhoster won the 184-pound bracket to claim his spot, while Burford finished third at 149 pounds to punch his ticket. The duo helped the Warhawks place seventh at the regional.
 
The NCAA Championship is set for March 11-12 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
 
Men's Track and Field
 
The Warhawks moved to No. 11 in the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division III Men's Indoor Rating Index.
 
UW-W placed fourth at the WIAC Indoor Championships (presented by Culver's) last weekend in Platteville. David Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) won the 3,000-meter run, Christian Patzka (Black Earth, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) finished first in the 5,000-meter run and Daustin Martin (Jefferson, Wis./Jefferson) earned the title in the weight throw to lead the Warhawks. The combination of Gunner Schlender (Brillion, Wis./Brillion), Luke Zanis (St. Charles, Ill./North), Andrew Lohse (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) and Fassbender crossed the finish line first in the distance medley relay.
 
UW-Whitewater student-athletes among the top 25 in the nation in their respective events entering the final weekend of qualifying include:

Gunner Schlender (Brillion, Wis./Brillion) – 13th, 3,000-meter run (8:18.68); 14th, 5,000-meter run (14:26.80)
Christian Patzka (Black Earth, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) – 18th, 3,000-meter run (8:19.53); 13th, 5,000-meter run (14:26.40)
Landon Keefover (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) – 17th, 60-meter hurdles (8.22)
Tamir Thomas (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) – 25th, 60-meter hurdles (8.24)
Curtis Pfeil (West Bend, Wis./West) – 7th, long jump (23-11.75 / 7.31 meters); 7th, triple jump (48-06.25 / 14.79 meters)
Shelvin Garrett II (Beloit, Wis./Memorial) – 15th, triple jump (47-09.25 / 14.56 meters)

The Warhawks head to last chance meets at Wartburg (Iowa), Carthage and Ripon this weekend.
 
Men's Tennis
 
John Zakowski (Green Bay, Wis./Southwest) and Cole Lindwall (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) end the calendar year ranked among the top 20 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Collegiate Tennis Division III Men's National Rankings after impressive performances at the ITA Midwest Regional in the fall.
 
Zakowski, the regional champion and All-American, is 13th, while Lindwall, the regional runner-up, is 16th. Both represented UW-Whitewater at the ITA Oracle Cup in October.
 
Zakowski and Alex Gray (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) are 17th in the national doubles rankings. The pair won the Midwest Regional title and competed in the doubles draw at the ITA Oracle Cup.
 
The Warhawks improved to 10-0 for the season in dual matches with three more wins at Lake Geneva Tennis last weekend. The team edged North Central (Ill.) 5-4 before shutting out Carthage and Dubuque (Iowa) by identical 9-0 scores.
 
UW-Whitewater visits Gustavus Adolphus this Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Peter, Minn.
 
Women's Tennis
 
Autumn Bruno (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield Whitnall), a ITA Midwest Regional semifinalist in the women's singles draw, will begin the spring season as the No. 40 ranked player in Division III.
 
Bruno and Cassie Lee (Downers Grove, Ill./Timothy Christian) won the regional's doubles draw and are ranked 16th in the nation by the ITA.
 
UW-Whitewater (10-0), which earned its 15th straight WIAC championship in the fall, will start the spring season Friday with a dual at Division I Northern Illinois.
 
Baseball
 
The Warhawks are sixth in the 2022 D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 25 and 11th in Collegiate Baseball's 2022 Preseason NCAA Division III Poll, which was released Dec. 21. UW-W was ninth in the final D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 in 2021.
 
UW-Whitewater dropped its 2022 season opener Thursday night, falling 10-8 at No. 17 Trinity (Texas). Zach Campbell (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) plated three runs to lead UW-W, which left 13 runners on base in the contest. Jacob DeMeyer (Harshaw, Wis./Rhinelander) finished with two hits and one RBI.
 
The Warhawks continue their four-game set at Trinity with a doubleheader Friday at 3 p.m. and a single game Saturday at 11 a.m. in San Antonio.
