The No. 18 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater bowling team is fourth out of 19 teams following the first day of team competition at the Intercollegiate Team Sectional at Stardust Bowl in Addison, Ill.
The Warhawks posted a total score of 6,308 over the course of eight four-game Baker blocks, four pins ahead of fifth-place St. Ambrose.
On Friday, UW-W's
Caitlin Mertins (Racine, Wis./Park) claimed the sectional's Singles Championship to punch her ticket to the Intercollegiate Singles Championships, which also take place in Addison April 19-20. Mertins totaled a score of 1,386 over six traditional games, including a high of 264, to top the field of 225 bowlers and earn a spot at the national tournament.
Other top singles finishers for the Warhawks included
Rebecca Howard (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove), who placed 17th overall with a 1,199, and
Olivia Zinanni (Sterling, Ill./Sterling), who finished 31st with a 1,166.
Competition at the sectional qualifier resumes Sunday at 7:45 a.m. The morning and afternoon sessions each include four four-game Baker blocks.
The top four team finishers qualify for the Intercollegiate Team Championships on April 20-23.
