The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team advanced two wrestlers to the national tournament Saturday and placed seventh at the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional in Eau Claire.
Jaritt Shinhoster (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Barrington) and
Jake Burford (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) punched their tickets to the NCAA Championship and helped the Warhawks total 85 team points.
Shinhoster finished off a 4-0 weekend with consecutive 10-0 major decisions in the semifinals and final at 184 pounds, earning a spot at the national tournament for the third time in his career.
After dropping his semifinal bout by sudden victory at 149 pounds, Burford recovered with a pair of wins by decision to finish in third place. He topped UW-Platteville's Brock Parker his final match by an 8-5 decision to punch his NCAA ticket for the first time in his career.
Ryan Vedner (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) just missed out on a bid to the national tournament, placing fourth at 174 pounds. All three of his bouts on Saturday were decided by decision, including a narrow 8-7 loss against No. 3 ranked Ben Sarasin of Chicago in the semifinals.
Chad Richards (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) finished fifth at 197 pounds, tallying a 4-2 record for the tournament.
Dakarai Clay (Madison, Wis./Madison East) placed seventh at 141 pounds and
Ethan Pogorzelski (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) was eighth at 133.
The NCAA Championship is scheduled for March 11-12 at U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
