The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team remains alive in six brackets following Friday's first day of the NCAA Division III Upper Midwest Regional at UW-Eau Claire.
Four Warhawks will compete in semifinals, while two others are on the consolation side of the bracket.
UW-Whitewater is seventh in the team standings with 60 points.
Jake Burford (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point),
Ryan Vedner (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect),
Jaritt Shinhoster (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Barrington) and
Chad Richards (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) each advanced to the semifinals at their respective weight classes.
Burford tallied two wins at 149 pounds, including a technical fall in his first-round bout, and will face UW-Eau Claire's Jake Drexler to start the second day. At 174, Vedner registered a fall and a 3-1 decision by sudden victory to punch his ticket to the semifinals, where he'll take on No. 3 ranked Ben Sarasin of Chicago, the bracket's top seed.
Shinhoster, the No. 1 seed at 184 pounds, picked up a technical fall and a pin to clinch a semifinal match against No. 9 ranked Maguire Pecci of Chicago. Richards tallied a 3-0 record with one pin and a pair of one-point decisions to move on to the semifinals, where he'll compete against Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann of Augsburg.
Ethan Pogorzelski (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) and
Dakarai Clay (Madison, Wis./Madison East) are still alive in the wrestleback sides at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively. Pogorzelski rebounded from a quarterfinal loss with a 6-3 decision to remain in the running for third place, while Clay recovered from a first-round setback with a pair of wins, including a 6-4 decision by sudden victory against UW-La Crosse's Tyler Shackle.
Regional competition resumes Saturday at 10 a.m.
