University Heights, Ohio -- The UW-Whitewater wrestling team took home the regional title with 163 points after two days of regional competition in University Heights, Ohio. The title is the programs' first since 2015, and first under Head Coach
Matt Zwaschka. After winning the Region V, Coach Zwaschka was named thee Regional Coach of the Year, with his Coaching Staff being named Regional Coaching Staff of the Year.
The Warhawks boasted five runner ups, two fourth place finishes, two fifth place finishes, and a sixth place finish, leading the team scores by nearly 20 points.
The Warhawks had seven out of their 10 wrestlers in the semifinal bouts after Friday's competition. Five of those seven on thier semifinal bout to reach the championship match. At 141, 6th-ranked
Justin Fortugno (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) won by decision over 9th-ranked Joshua Robinson (North Central) in the semifinal. Fortugno fell in the championship to 11th-ranked Sean Conway (UChicago) by a 5-2 decision.
At 149, top-ranked
Dominik Mallinder (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) won his semifinal bout with a 14-10 decision. In the championship, Mallinder faced off against 11th-ranked Max Mukhamedallyev (UChicago). Mallinder fell in sudden victory after a takedown from Mukhamedallyev.
At 157, 14th-ranked
Luke Swan (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) defeated Thomas Wagner (Case Western) in the semifinal bout. Swan took on 3rd-ranked Rhenzo Augusto (Elmhurst) in the championship match, falling 11-1. 7th-ranked
Brayden Peet (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) won his semifinal bout at 165, but fell to 5th-ranked Aiden Smith (Adrian) by a 1-0 decision in the championship.
Jermaine Butler (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) took second overall at 174, defeating Chase Crutchley (Case Western) by a 4-1 decision in the semifinal.
Tyler Haydon (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) lost his semifinal match at 197, but battle back and defeated Aidan Gassel (Case Western) with a takedown in sudden victory to finish 4th overall.
Jordan Lewis (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove North) also bounced back to finish 4th place at 285, winning five matches straight to take the fourth place spot.
Brady Phelps (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) at 125 and
Jordan Rasof (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) at 133 both placed fifth overall in their respective weight classes. Phelps and Rasof each went 4-2 on the weekend, Rasof had 3 pins over the regional tournament. After making the semifinals on Friday,
RJ Samuels (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South) fell in his Saturday matches, taking 6th place overall at 184.
