2022 WIAC Indoor Championships Preview

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's track and field teams are set to compete at the 2022 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championships (presented by Culver's), the first indoor conference meet in two years, this Friday and Saturday at UW-Platteville.
 
Events begin Friday at 11:30 a.m. and continue Saturday at 10 a.m. Admission costs $8 for adults ($14 for both days) and $5 for seniors (62+) and youth and is free for WIAC students (with ID) and children aged 5 and under.
 
The Warhawk men are coming off a runner-up finish at the 2021 WIAC Outdoor Championships. The UW-W women placed eighth at the same meet. In 2020, the men finished fourth and the women placed fifth at the WIAC Indoor Championships.
 
See below for a preview of each team heading into the conference meet.
 
Women
 
Tina Shelton (Janesville, Wis./Parker) is seeded eighth in the 60-meter dash with her personal record time of 7.93 seconds. She will also represent the Warhawks in the 200-meter dash with her collegiate-best time of 26.90 seconds.
 
Kylie Jacobs (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) and Katie McNamara (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) rank 11th and 12th, respectively, in the 400-meter dash. Jacobs' top time is 1:01.14, while McNamara enters with a season-best 1:01.27. Paige Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) leads UW-W in the 800-meter run with a season-best 2:18.46.
 
Ari De La Cerda (Milwaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) ranks ninth among competitors in the 3,000-meter run with her career-best time of 10:37.73.
 
Lena Becker (Toulon, Ill./Stark County) is one of four entries in the 60-meter hurdles with a team-leading time of 9.90.
 
The Warhawks' distance medley relay team includes Fassbender, Jacobs, Sarah Niehueser (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran Academy) and De La Cerda. The team's 4x400-meter relay team of McNamara, Jacobs, Fassbender and Niehueser enters as the No. 6 seed in the race.
 
Gracie Holland (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) leads the conference and ranks eighth in Division III with her career-best height of 12-04.00 (3.76 meters). She is a two-time All-WIAC honoree and a 2021 outdoor national qualifier in the event. Rebecca Lawrence (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) is one of two WIAC qualifiers in the high jump with a personal record height of 4-10.50 (1.49 meters).
 
Kenni Czarnecki (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) will represent the Warhawks in the throwing events. Her season best marks include a 39-06.50 (12.05 meters) in the shot put and a career-best 48-10.25 (14.89 meters) in the weight throw.
 
Abigail Missiaen (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) is one of three from UW-Whitewater set to compete in the pentathlon. She reached the podium in the event in 2020, placing eighth.
 
Men
 
Victor Rinaldi (Medford, Wis./Medford) headlines a group of seven UW-W qualifiers in the 60-meter dash. His career-best time of 6.89 seconds ranks 11th among entries. He is also the Warhawks' top entry in the 200-meter dash with his personal record time of 22.12 seconds, good for the No. 5 seed.
 
Luke Zanis (St. Charles, Ill./North) will represent UW-Whitewater in the 400-meter dash with his season-best result of 50.37 seconds.
 
Justin Krause (Ixonia, Wis./Pewaukee) ranks fifth in the WIAC in the 800-meter run (1:55.22) and leads all competitors in the 1-mile run with his personal record time of 4:11.81.
 
David Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger), Christian Patzka (Black Earth, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) and Gunner Schlender (Brillion, Wis./Brillion) hold the top three seeds in the WIAC in the 3,000-meter run. Fassbender, the defending champion in the 3K, holds a season-best 8:17.42. Patzka, a 2021 outdoor All-American, is second with his career-best time of 8:19.53 and Schlender is third with a personal record 8:20.77. All three runners rank among the top 20 in the nation in the event entering the weekend.
 
Patzka will compete as a wild card entry in the 5,000-meter run, an event in which he placed second at the 2021 outdoor meet.
 
Tamir Thomas (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) and Landon Keefover (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) are seeded first and third, respectively, in the 60-meter hurdles. Thomas owns a top time of 8.24 seconds, while Keefover, a two-time WIAC placer in the event, is just behind with an 8.26.
 
The Warhawks will be represented in the distance medley relay by Schlender, Zanis, Andrew Lohse (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) and Fassbender. Zanis, Noah Selensky (Franklin, Wis./Franklin), Zach Miller (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) and Will Kaashagen (Cambridge, Wis./Cambridge) will run the 4x400-meter relay for UW-Whitewater.
 
Josh Krystosek (Palmyra, Wis./Palmyra-Eagle) enters the meet as the No. 5 seed in the high jump with his season-best height of 6-07.00 (2.01 meters), good for 22nd in the nation. He claimed the individual league title in the event at the 2021 outdoor meet. Chris Bitz (Brookfield, Wis./East) leads the team and ranks 10th among entries in the pole vault with his season-best height of 14-09.00 (4.50 meters).
 
Curtis Pfeil (West Bend, Wis./West) leads UW-Whitewater in the long jump with his personal record distance of 23-08.75 (7.23 meters), good for 10th in NCAA Division III. He also leads a group of three Warhawks among the top six seeds in the triple jump with his career-best 48-06.25 (14.79 meters), good for second in the WIAC and sixth in the nation. Shelvin Garrett II (Beloit, Wis./Memorial) ranks third with a 47-05.00 (14.45 meters), which ranks 17th nationally, and Brayden Zettle (Monroe, Wis./Monroe) is sixth with a season-long 46-00.50 (14.03 meters).
 
Daustin Martin (Jefferson, Wis./Jefferson) leads the team in both throwing events. He owns a season-best 49-11.75 (15.23 meters) in the shot put, good for third in the conference, and a 60-11.25 (18.57 meters) in the weight throw, good for second in the conference and sixth in the nation.
 
Jack McGinn (Madison, Wis./McFarland) leads a group of four Warhawks in the heptathlon. He ranks seventh among entries with a career-best score of 4,065.
