The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's swim teams topped UW-Oshkosh in dual meet action in Whitewater Saturday. The Warhawk men won 186-78 while the women registered a 167-87 victory.
The Warhawks' 200-yard medley relay squads got the meet started with a pair of wins.
Gianna Gnewuch (Madison, Wis./Verona Area),
Gabby Sponseller (Goshen, Ind./Concord),
Naomi Hamerla (Lac Du Flambeau, Wis./Lakeland Union) and
Zaria Terry (Madison, Wis./La Follette) combined for a time of 1:54.07 to win the women's race by nearly six seconds. On the men's side, Matt Ozog,
Donny Gramer (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore),
Ethan Coons (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) and
Ethan Bergman (Racine, Wis./Bradford) were the first to touch with a time of 1:40.04.
UWW recorded a number of individual event winners Saturday.
Hunter Hayberger (Sandusky, Ohio/Sandusky) was clocked in 10:27.07 to win the 1,000 free. He added a time of 5:00.90 to win the 500 free.
Dom Schlueter (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) took first in the 200-yard free and 100 free with times of 1:47.05 and 48.73 respectively. He was also tops in the 200-yard individual medley stopping the clock in 2:09.38.
Gnewuch was the first to touch in the 100 backstroke, clocking a time of 1:02.64. She added a gold in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:37.70. Sponseller added a pair of victories for the Warhawks. Her time of 1:12.61 in the 100 breaststroke topped the competition while her 2:21.23 in the 200 IM was also the best in the pool.
Terry added first place points in the 50 free with a time of 24.90. In the 100 free, Terry came from behind, turning it on late in the race to out-touch the competition by just .13 with a time of 54.43. Bergman also added a pair of wins to the men's total. His 22.42 was tops in the 50 free while his 54.01 was the best in the 100 butterfly by a second.
Gramer posted a win in the 100 breaststroke coming into the wall in 1:01.74 and Ozog was the first-place finisher in the 200 fly clocking a 2:11.03 to win by just .14.
The 200 backstroke was claimed by
Brianna Zimdars (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) with a time of 2:25.84. In the men's race, Coons was the first to touch with a clocking of 2:07.02.
Daniel Keller (Omaha, Neb./Papillion-LaVista) picked up a win in the 200 breaststoke with a time of 2:18.38 while Hamerla was tops in the women's 100 fly, touching in 1:04.36.
Both 200 freestyle relay teams for UWW capped the meet the way they started it - with first place finishes. The Warhawk women's squad of Terry,
Maren McDonnell (West Bend, Wis./East),
Ciara Hynes (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) and
Morgan Nabors (Spring Green, Wis./River Valley) were clocked in 1:44.32 while the men's combination of Bergman, Gramer, Coons and Schlueter registered a time of 1:30.85.
