Warhawks Advance in First Day of WIAC Championship

All three University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis doubles duos advanced to the finals of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships and will compete Sunday. Additionally, the Warhawks held the top seeds for all six singles draws, with each receiving a first-round bye directly into the semifinals.
 
The first day of competition in the league championships at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin featured the first two rounds of doubles and the first round of singles play.
 
At No. 1 doubles, Autumn Bruno (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenfield Whitnall) and Cassie Lee (Downers Grove, Ill./Timothy Christian), the number two seed, recorded a pair of sweeps with 8-0 wins over UW-River Falls and UW-Stout to advance to the finals.
 
Top-seeded Kasey Schlicht (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) and Kellie Ha (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) received a first-round bye at No. 2 doubles, and defeated UW-La Crosse 8-1 to advance to the championship. Gianna Nikoleit (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) and Courtney Day (Oshkosh, Wis./North) followed suit with an 8-1 win over UW-Stevens Point in the No. 3 doubles semi after a bye in the first round.
 
Bruno was the No. 1 doubles champion last season with a different teammate and was selected as the league's Newcomer of the Year. Day also holds a doubles title with a championship at No. 3 doubles in 2019.
 
All six Warhawks competing in singles are the top seeds and garnered byes in the first round. Bruno will take to the court for her first singles match tomorrow at in the No. 1 draw. Nikoleit and Lee will compete at No. 2 and 3 respectively, followed by Schlicht and Ha at No. 4 and 5 singles. Bethany Marshall (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) will represent UWW at No. 6 singles.
 
The Warhawks have the most conference titles in league history after capturing the program's 22nd last season. The team champion is determined by using a combination of the regular-season dual-meet standings and the WIAC championship results. UW-Whitewater holds the lead heading into the championship with seven points due to a perfect 6-0 dual meet record. The top four teams in this championship advance to a team tournament in the spring that will determine the league's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Division III Championship.
