The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team concluded its season-opening stretch of home matches Sunday with victories against Lake Forest (Ill.) and UW-River Falls in duals contested at the Warhawk Outdoor Tennis Complex.
The Warhawks (6-0 overall, 2-0 WIAC) started the day with an 8-1 non-conference win, then posted a 9-0 triumph to extend their Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual unbeaten streak to 112 matches.
Against Lake Forest (1-2), UW-Whitewater swept the three doubles matches for an early 3-0 advantage.
Bryce Bigelow (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) and
Sarah Ferguson (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) tallied an 8-0 victory at the third position, and
Kellie Ha (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) and
Cassie Lee (Downers Grove, Ill./Timothy Christian) combined for an 8-2 win at the first position.
Molly Rueth (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard West) and
Courtney Day (Oshkosh, Wis./North) doubles with an 8-4 triumph.
Madalyn Bigelow (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) started off singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6, and
Zenia Barretto (Dubai, United Arab Emirates/Gems Wellington International School) earned a win by the same score at No. 5 to clinch the dual.
Other straight-set winners included
Gianna Nikoleit (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) at No. 2,
Bethany Marshall (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) at No. 4 and Lee at No. 1.
Against UW-River Falls (0-5, 0-1), the Warhawks didn't drop more than three games in any doubles pro set. Marshall and Ha were on the board first with an 8-1 victory at No. 2, and were followed by Lee and Nikoleit at No. 3, who registered an 8-0 triumph. Day and Rueth teamed up for an 8-3 win at the No. 1 spot.
Marshall and Rueth didn't surrender a game in straight-set victories at Nos. 5 and 6 singles, respectively. Nikoleit and Ha dropped only one game apiece in wins at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.
Lee collected a 6-0, 6-2 triumph at the first position, and Day capped the match with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4.
UW-Whitewater heads to the western part of the state next Friday and Saturday for matches at UW-Eau Claire and UW-La Crosse. Friday's match against the Blugolds is set for 3:30 p.m.
