The No. 16 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater bowling team kicked off the 2021 winter season in Warhawk Athletics on the first day of the Warhawk Classic at Rock River Lanes in Fort Atkinson, Wis.
Playing for the first time since March 8, 2020, the Warhawks amassed 4,313 pins in four traditional games for an average of 172.5 per individual game.
UW-Whitewater started the day with a victory over Valparaiso before falling consecutively against Lewis, No. 18 Maryville and Upper Iowa.
Juniors Sam Knab (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) and Caitlin Mertins (Racine, Wis./Park) placed 10th and 11th overall, respectively, in the field of 36 bowlers to lead the Warhawks. Knab averaged a 180 over four games, including a team-best 225, and Mertins averaged a 177.40, including no games below a 166.
Senior Peyton Attig (Oak Lawn, Ill./Harold L. Richards) finished 16th with 701 pins over three games, good for a 175.25 average. Juniors Kelsey Jaeger (New London, Wis./Little Wolf) and Taylor Purgett (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) placed 20th and 21st, respectively. Jaeger averaged a 175.33 over three games, and Purgett tallied a 172 average over three games.
Senior Karlee Barton (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) bowled games of 169 and 164 to finish 28th. Senior Mary Conneely (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) and sophomore Rachel Pavlik (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) placed 30th and 31st, respectively. Conneely rolled a 152.50 average over two games, and Pavlik scored a 145 in her only game of the day.
Competition resumes Sunday with Baker total pinfall matches at 8:30 a.m.
