Men Fifth, Women Sixth After Day 1 at Conference Meet

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's track and field teams combined for a pair of individual event titles Friday on the first day of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championships (Presented by Culver's) at UW-Oshkosh.
 
The Warhawk men amassed 20.33 points, and are fifth after the first day of competition through the completion of seven of 17 events. The women posted 22 points and are sixth through eight of 17 events.
 
Junior Shelby Nickels (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln) claimed the championship in the women's long jump with a season-best mark of 18-06.00 (5.64 meters), which ranks among the top 15 in NCAA Division III.
 
Freshman Miranda Reynolds (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) placed fourth in the high jump with a height of 5-02.25 (1.58 meters). The distance medley relay team of junior Sydney Prestifilippo (Naperville, Ill./North), sophomore Kylie Jacobs (Watertown, Wis./Watertown), freshman Paige Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) and junior Jessie Braun (Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine) compiled a time of 12:33.25, good for fourth place.
 
Other scorers included senior Madi McDonald (Brookfield, Wis./East), who placed eighth in the pole vault with a mark of 11-03.00 (3.43 meters), and freshman Sarah Niehueser (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran Academy), who earned a spot on the podium with an eighth-place finish and career-best time of 1:01.05 in the 400-meter dash.
 
Sophomores Kailey Reynolds (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) and Sydney Rossow (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) qualified for Saturday's finals in their respective events. Reynolds surged into the top 15 in the nation with a personal-record 7.75 in the 60-meter dash preliminaries, good for second place. Rossow crossed the finish line in 9.21 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles to claim the No. 8 seed in the final.
 
The men's distance medley relay team of senior Clinten Woerishofer (Appleton, Wis./North), freshman Will Kaashagen (Cambridge, Wis./Cambridge), freshman Andrew Lohse (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) and junior David Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) earned the conference title with a time of 10:18.46, more than 10 seconds faster than the runner-up.
 
Two Warhawks found themselves on the podium in the pole vault. Junior Zach Jasinski (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton) finished fourth with a height of 15-03.50 (4.66 meters), and junior Jack Scully (Oshkosh, Wis./West) tied for eighth with his personal-record 14-09.50 (4.51 meters).
 
Junior Kyle Neuroth (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and freshman Justin Krause (Ixonia, Wis./Pewaukee) placed among the top eight in their respective distance events. Neuroth finished sixth in the 5,000-meter run in a career-best 15:10.30, and Krause placed seventh in the 1-mile run in a personal-record 4:18.86.
 
UW-Whitewater earned two spots each in the finals of the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles. Junior Dwayne Ford (Racine, Wis./Case) won his heat to qualify in the 60 with a time of 7.01 seconds, and junior Tyreik Thomas (Racine, Wis./Case) qualified eighth with a season-best 7.00. In the hurdles, senior Alex Duff (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) won his heat with the second-best time in the field, an 8.23. Sophomore Landon Keefover (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) claimed the fifth seed in Saturday's final with a time of 8.37.
 
Competition resumes Saturday at 11 a.m.
