Men, Women Third After First Day at WIAC Championships

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's swimming and diving teams combined for four all-conference honors, including two titles, on the first day of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships (Presented by Culver's) at Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer.
 
The Warhawk women collected 178 points, just over 10 out of second place and less than 20 out of first. The men earned 171 points.
 
Senior Renata Schlomann (New Berlin, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels) highlighted the day for the women with back-to-back school record performances in the 50-yard freestyle. After posting a 23.61 in the prelim, she dropped four more hundredths for a 23.57, good for her second career individual conference title and an NCAA "B" cut.
 
Schlomann, freshman Savana Bitz (Grey Eagle, Minn./Melrose Area), junior Olivia Theobald (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap) and senior Bailey Weston (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) combined to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:36.75, out-touching runner-up UW-La Crosse by nearly half a second.
 
Theobald later placed third in the 500-yard freestyle with a career-best 5:08.38, only eight-hundredths shy of second place. Senior Meredith Gustafson (Brookfield, Wis./East) also qualified for the "A" final with a season-best time in the preliminary and placed sixth with a 5:17.81.
 
Freshman Leanne Stigler (Beloit, Wis./Muskego) earned her first All-WIAC medal by placing second in the 200-yard individual medley in a personal-record 2;11.66, just over three-tenths off the winning pace.
 
Weston joined Schlomann on the 50 free podium with a 24.98, good for seventh place. She had recorded a season-best 24.84 in the prelim of the race.
 
The women's 400-yard medley relay of Schlomann, Stigler, Gustafson and Weston finished second in 3:57.70 to earn second team all-conference honors.
 
On the men's side, sophomore Tristan Whiting (Hayden, Idaho/Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy) garnered All-WIAC accolades with his runner-up finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a personal record time of 4:40.20. Junior Zach Noll (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap) joined Whiting on the podium with his season-best time of 4:43.65, good for fourth place.
 
Junior Tyler Chatterton (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) collected a career-best 1:54.61 in the 200-yard individual medley to finish sixth in the event.
 
Three men placed among the top eight in the 50-yard freestyle, including junior Nick Jelich (Milwaukee, Wis./Marquette University HS), who finished third in 21.44 after qualifying with a career-best 21.34 in the prelim. Sophomore Zach Miller (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) and junior Jake Herlache (West Bend, Wis./Grafton) finished seventh and eight, respectively. Miller touched the wall in a personal-record 21.75 seconds, and Herlache tallied a season-best 21.91.
 
Sophomore Zach Miller (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington), freshman Joe Wenszell (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Virtual Learning), sophomore Alex Tenhagen (Burlington, Wis./Wilmot Union) and junior Jordan Kreitzman (Milwaukee, Wis./Rufus King) finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:25.96, less than one-tenth of a second out of third.
 
Herlache, Chatterton, Jelich and Wenszell combined to place third in the 400-yard medley relay, completing the race in 3:57.52.
 
Action resumes Friday with preliminaries at 10 a.m. and finals at 6:30 p.m.
