The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to UW-La Crosse on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Warhawk men were edged 144-126 and the women lost 200-94.
 
"We have been working hard in the pool, on the boards, and in the weight room these past few weeks. Even though we are tired and sore from all the work we've put in, I was proud of how we stepped up and raced today," said head coach Elise Knoche, "With less than two weeks to the start of the WIAC Championships, and today was a chance to practice race strategies a few more times, and focus on perfecting the small details."
 
The men found seven individual first-place finishes, including sophomore Tyler Popke (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) claiming both breaststroke events. He finished the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.81 and the 200-yard breaststroke in a 2:21.06 mark. 
 
Freshman Joe Wenszell (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Virtual Learning) also claimed a stroke event, winning the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 1:58.79. Junior Tyler Chatterton (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) finished first in the 200-yard individual medley, touching the wall at the 2:00.03 mark.
 
The Warhawks also found victories in three freestyle events. Junior Nick Jelich (Milwaukee, Wis./Marquette University HS) swam the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:47.05, junior Jake Herlache (West Bend, Wis./Grafton) touched the wall at the 22.14 mark and sophomore Tristan Whiting (Hayden, Idaho/Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy) wrapped up the group with a 4:57.58 time in the 500-yard freestyle.
 
Sophomores Zach Miller (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) and Alex Tenhagen (Burlington, Wis./Wilmot Union) combined with Jelich and Herlache to finish the 200-yard freestyle relay in a 1:28.30 mark, good for a first place finish.
 
The women finished first in five individual events, with the first three wins coming from seniors, beginning with Bailey Weston's (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) win in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:59.18. Meredith Gustafson (Brookfield, Wis./East) posted a 2:15.86 in the 200-yard butterfly followed by Renata Schlomann's (New Berlin, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels) 54.35 finish in the 100-yard freestyle.
 
Freshman Madyson Gomez (Cary, Ill./Dundee Crown) touched the wall at the 2:16.15 mark in the 200-yard backstroke and junior Olivia Theobald (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap) wrapped up the individual winners with a time of 5:21.42 in the 500-yard freestyle.
 
Freshman Savana Bitz (Grey Eagle, Minn./Melrose Area) and senior Shayna Putney (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) combined with Schlomann and Weston to claim the 200-yard freestyle with a winning time of 1:41.95.
 
Looking forward, Knoche said, "Based on our training this year, as well as our performances at meets throughout the year, our swimmers and divers are well poised for the upcoming WIAC Championships."
 
UW-Whitewater will be back in action at Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deere, Wis. for the WIAC Championships Feb. 13-15.
