The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's swim team started the New Year with a pair of wins over Lake Forest and Lawrence. The men split the duals, recording a win over Lawrence and a loss to Lake Forest on Saturday afternoon in Lake Forest, Ill.
Â
The Warhawk women bested Lawrence 159-62 and edged Lake Forest 135.5-100.5 while the men downed Lawrence 106-80 and lost to Lake forest 142-77.
Â
"It has been eight weeks since our last meet, so it was great to get back in the pool and step up to swim against some great competition in the teams from Lawrence and Lake Forest," UW-Whitewater Head Coach
Elise Knoche said.
Â
"Swimming in a 25 meter pool, as opposed to a 25 yard pool, meant that we would have to swim a bit longer in all of our races. Even so, our swimmers did a great job of finishing their races strong, even when their arms and legs were tired and sore from all the training we've been putting in over the last few weeks."
Â
Leading the men's side with first place finishes are two underclassmen.
Joe Wenszell (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Virtual Learning)Â took the 200-meter individual medley, posting a time of 2:15.17.
Tyler Popke (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) won the 100-meter breaststroke in a time of 1:08.40.
Â
Popke and Wenszell teamed up with
Chase Searcy (Lincoln, Neb./Southeast) and
Alex Tenhagen (Burlington, Wis./Wilmot Union) to claim the 200-meter medley relay, finishing with a time of 1:52.33
Â
In the 400-meter freestyle relay, Wenszell and Tenhagen combined with
Zach Miller (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) and
Tristan Whiting (Hayden, Idaho/Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy) finished in 3:43.75, good for another first place finish.
Â
The Warhawk women claimed five individual events, including two from
Leanne Stigler (Beloit, Wis./Muskego). She finished the 200-meter individual medley in a time of 2:31.44 and touched the wall at the 1:19.87 mark in the 100-meter breaststroke.
Â
Other first place finishers included
Renata Schlomann (New Berlin, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels),
Bailey Weston (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) and Mady Gomez. Schlomann won the 50-meter freestyle in 28.15 seconds, Weston took the 100-meter freestyle in 1:02.88 and Gomez touched the wall first in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:10.32.
Â
Schlomann, Stigler, Weston and
Meredith Gustafson (Brookfield, Wis./East) teamed up in the 200-meter medley relay, finishing with a winning time of 2:09.19. In the 400-meter freestyle relay, Schlomann and Weston combined with
Shayna Putney (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) and
Savana Bitz (Grey Eagle, Minn./Melrose Area), finishing in 4:10.25 for an additional first place finish.

UW-Whitewater hosts UW-Eau Claire next Saturday, Jan. 25, for a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual starting at 1 p.m.
