The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team completed the first day of action Friday with five singles players still alive and three doubles teams remaining in the main draws of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn.
 
Juniors Paige Nierman (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson), Sabrina Palavra (Skokie, Ill./Niles North), sophomores Elsie Ha (Palatine, Ill./Fremd), Olivia Kraft (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) and Jessica Minkov (Schiller Park, Ill./East Leyden) each advanced to the Round of 32. Senior Madeline Slicker (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) and freshman Courtney Day (Oshkosh, Wis./North) were defeated in the Round of 64 by the top two seeds in the singles draw.
 
On the doubles side, the teams of Nierman/Palavra, Kraft/Day and sophomore Molly Rueth (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard West) and freshman Megan Setter (Kenosha, Wis./St. Joseph Catholic Academy) punched their tickets to the Round of 16. Kraft/Day and Rueth/Setter produced two victories apiece on Friday, while the combination of Nierman/Palavra earned a bye and claimed one match.
 
Rueth and Setter advanced to the finals of the Nos. 2 and 3 singles draws, respectively, at the Gustie Fall Invite. Junior Katie Toomire (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs), sophomores Bryce Bigelow (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper), Madalyn Bigelow (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) and freshman MacKenzie Lindow (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) each bowed out in the semifinals of their respective draws.
 
Senior Madeline Slicker (Mequon, Wis./Homestead), playing doubles at the Gustie Fall Invite with Wartburg's Amber Laube, posted a pair of wins Friday and is on to the Round of 16 in the No. 2 draw.
