The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team won the eight-team Warhawk Invitational, the 49th edition of the tournament, on Saturday at Wangerin Courts.
The Warhawks totaled 48 team points to top runner-up Grinnell (Iowa), which finished with 42.
UW-Whitewater claimed two of the three singles draws and two of the three doubles flights on its way to the championship.
Senior
Madeline Slicker (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) claimed the No. 3 draw with three straight victories, including a pair of three-setters. She topped Emma Gaydos of Grinnell 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4) in the final.
Sophomore
Jessica Minkov (Schiller Park, Ill./East Leyden) earned first place at No. 2 without dropping a set. She bested Grinnell's Sophia Delosreyes by a 6-4, 6-2 count in the final.
Junior
Sabrina Palavra (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) and sophomore
Olivia Kraft (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) combined for the title at No. 2 doubles, losing only eight games during the tournament. The pair defeated Alexa Brooks and Emma Barnd of UW-Eau Claire 6-0, 6-2 to clinch the championship.
Sophomores
Bryce Bigelow (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) and
Madalyn Bigelow (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) teamed up for first place at No. 3 doubles, knocking off sophomore
Elsie Ha (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) and freshman
Courtney Day (Oshkosh, Wis./North) by a 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4) score in the final.
Sophomore
Molly Rueth (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard West) and freshman
Megan Setter (Kenosha, Wis./St. Joseph Catholic Academy) finished second in the No. 1 doubles draw, falling in a third-set super tiebreaker against Grinnell.
Junior
Paige Nierman (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson) placed fourth in the No. 1 singles draw, earning a victory over Illinois Wesleyan to punch her ticket to the semifinals before falling in matches against Grinnell and UW-Eau Claire.
The Warhawks return to Wangerin Courts next Sunday, Sept. 8, for a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against UW-River Falls at 9 a.m. and a non-conference affair against Illinois Tech at 1 p.m.
