Track and Field Teams Complete Day 1 at WIAC Meet

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's track and field teams claimed two individual titles and posted several other impressive performances Friday on the first day of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships (Presented by Culver's) at UW-Platteville.
 
The Warhawk men are fourth in the team standings with 29 points, four ahead of UW-Oshkosh and three behind UW-Stevens Point. The women rank sixth with 18.50 points, 6.50 behind UW-Oshkosh for fifth.
 
On the men's side, junior Zach Jasinski (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton) earned his third WIAC championship on pole vault, including his first outdoors. He posted a height of 16-05.50 (5.02 meters). Junior Adam Schommer (Freedom, Wis./Freedom) reached the podium with a seventh-place finish at a height of 14-08.00 (4.47 meters).
 
Sophomore David Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) completed the evening with his first WIAC championship in the 10,000-meter run, the program's first in the event since 2002. His career-best time of 30:32.40 is a UW-Platteville facility record and ranks among the top 20 in NCAA Division III.
 
Junior Alex Duff (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) won the preliminary race of the 110-meter hurdles, posting a national top-five time of 14.32 seconds. Freshman Landon Keefover (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) also qualified for Saturday's final with a 14.99, good for fifth in the prelim.
 
Duff also won the 400-meter hurdles preliminary in 53.58 seconds, good for a season best and a top 15 time in the nation. Keefover also qualified for Saturday's final, placing seventh in a career-best 56.33 seconds.
 
Sophomore Griffin Gawenda (Grayslake, Ill./North) and freshman Carl Wesley Jr. (Madison, Wis./La Follette) earned spots on the podium in the long jump, finishing fifth and seventh, respectively. Gawenda registered a season-best mark of 22-01.50 (6.74 meters), while Wesley Jr. collected a 21-11.50 (6.69 meters).
 
Sophomore Seth Zimdars (Ripon, Wis./Ripon) reached the podium in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, shattering his personal record with a time of 9:28.90, good for eighth place.
 
Two will represent UW-Whitewater in Saturday's 100-meter dash final as freshman Victor Rinaldi (Medford, Wis./Medford) qualified fifth with a personal record 10.84 seconds, and sophomore Dwayne Ford (Racine, Wis./Case) placed sixth in the preliminary with a 10.89.
 
For the women, junior Abbie Felton (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) entered the top 10 in NCAA Division III in the 400-meter dash with a season-best time of 56.78, good for second in the preliminary race. Sophomore Megan Hering (Black Earth, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) also qualified for the 400 final by finishing seventh with a career-best result of 59.23 seconds.
 
Felton also finished second in the 200-meter dash trials, recording a season-best time of 25.62 seconds.
 
Junior Madi McDonald (Brookfield, Wis./East) matched her career best in the pole vault with a height of 11-04.25 (3.46 meters), good for a tie for fourth place.
 
Sophomores Jessie Braun (Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine) and Shelby Nickels (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln) reached the podium in their respective finals. Nickels finished fifth in the long jump with a season-best 18-00.50 (5.50 meters), while Braun topped her personal record with a mark of 11:53.63 to place sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
 
Sophomore Abigail Missiaen (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) placed fifth in the javelin throw a toss of 115-07 (35.24 meters), and senior Brittany Sykes (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) was close behind in sixth with a 112-00 (34.15 meters).
 
Missiaen is in sixth in the heptathlon with 2,421 points through four events. Sophomore Emery Podowicz (Clifton, Ill./Central) established a personal record in the 400-meter hurdles with a 1:05.99, good for seventh in qualifying.

Day 2 of the WIAC Championships begins at 11 a.m. with multi events. Field events begin at 12 p.m., and track events are slated to start at 2:30 p.m.
