The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis squad hosted St. Scholastica for the first round of their NCAA Regional Friday morning at Wangerin Courts.

The no. 36 Warhawks (13-11) took down St. Scholastica (17-7) in a 5-0 sweep to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.Â

The Warhawks started off strong, claiming all three doubles matches. Seniors
Gabi Kitchell (Wausau, Wis./D.C. Everest) and
Julie Martin (Morton, Ill./Morton) dominated in the first slot 8-3, while sophomore
Paige Nierman (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson) and freshman
Molly Rueth (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard West) followed with a similar 8-4 performance in the third slot.

Sabrina Palavra (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) and freshman
Olivia Kraft (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) clinched the doubles sweep in a tight affair, escaping with an 8-7 (4) victory in the second match.

In singles, Kitchell led the way with a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the first slot. Palavra clinched the match for the Warhawks in the fourth slot in a 6-1, 6-1 affair.

The Warhawks will play again Saturday at 10 a.m. at Wangerin Courts. They will play either Carleton or Edgewood in the second round. The Warhawks lost both regular season matches to Carleton, falling 7-2 on Sept. 15 at home and by a 6-3 count on March 26 at Hilton Head Island, S.C., during their Spring Trip. The Warhawks defeated Edgewood 9-0 on April 22 at home.
