The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's cross country teams competed Friday at the UW-Oshkosh Open in their final race before next Saturday's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
The Warhawk men finished first out of five teams in the 8-kilometer race, while the women placed third out of four teams in the 6-kilometer event. The meet took place at the UW-Whitewater Campus Trails due to course conditions at Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne, where it was originally scheduled.
Freshman
Andrew Lohse (Dixon, Ill./Dixon), sophomore
Mathias Otten (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Lutheran) and senior
Seth Zimdars (Ripon, Wis./Ripon) finished 3-4-5 for UW-Whitewater in the 54-runner field on the men's side. Lohse crossed the finish line in 27:49.6, Otten trailed by just under five seconds at 27:54.1 and Zimdars completed the course in 27:54.6.
Freshmen
Prue Thomas (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) and
Matthew Peloso (Downers Grove, Ill./South) also finished in a pack, placing 16th and 17th, respectively. Thomas posted a 28:41.8, while Peloso tallied a 28:45.0.
Freshman
Kyle Legler (Monroe, Wis./Monroe) collected a personal record time of 29:04.5, good for 23rd overall, and freshman
Lucas Miller (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) rounded out the varsity seven with a 29:08.8, good for 26th.
For the women, junior
Kennedy Hauser (Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) placed seventh out of 32 entries with a 26:25.8. Junior
Jenny Kinjerski (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) also placed among the top 10 with a 27:22.3, good for 10th.
Sophomore
Sarah Daley (Aurora, Ill./Kaneland), senior
Gabrielle Martin (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) and sophomore
Amanda Leder (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) were next to finish for the Warhawks. Daley crossed the finish line in 27:22.6, good for 11th place, Martin completed the course in 27:24.0, good for 12th, and Leder finished 14th with her time of 27:41.5.
Sophomore
Morgan Smarzinski (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) and freshman
Kristan Larson (Rio, Wis./Rio) rounded out the varsity seven by placing 18th and 19th, respectively. Smarzinski registered a 28:25.7, and Larson posted a career-best 28:33.2.
The WIAC Championships are slated for Saturday, Nov. 2, at Cole Acres Golf Club in Cuba City, Wis. The men's race begins at 12 p.m., with the women's race to follow at 1 p.m.
