Cross Country Teams Compete in Connecticut

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's cross country teams wrapped up a weekend on the East Coast Saturday by competing in the Connecticut College Invitational at Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford, Conn.
 
The Warhawk men finished in the top half of a field loaded with eight nationally-ranked teams, placing 12th out of 28. The women, competing against 10 nationally-ranked opponents, placed 22nd out of 29 teams.
 
Junior David Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) placed third out of 409 runners in the men's field, smashing his personal record by more than 30 seconds with a 24:17.5 in the 8-kilometer race.
 
Junior Kyle Neuroth (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) also established a new career best time with a 25:22.0, good for 30th overall. Freshman Justin Krause (Ixonia, Wis./Pewaukee) was also among the top quarter of the field, placing 87th with a collegiate-best 26:00.0.
 
Junior Conner Hackett (Darlington, Wis./Darlington) finished 113th with a 26:14.2, and junior Brian Kuehl (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) crossed the finish line in 27:15.6, good for 212th overall. Senior Grant Miller (Cedarburg, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) and freshman Nick Schmidt (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton) ran in a pack and finished 231st and 232nd, respectively. Miller recorded a 27:29.8, and Schmidt collected a 27:30.3.
 
On the women's side, junior Jessica Braun completed the 6-kilometer race in 23:25.8, good for 109th out of 365 entries. Junior Sydney Prestifilippo (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) was close behind in 23:38.2, good for 122nd.
 
Sophomore Julia Wesley (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) completed the race in 24:24.4, good for 180th overall. Freshman Alyssa Dobbs (Greendale, Wis./Greendale), sophomore Sarah Niehueser (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran Academy) and freshman Jill Cavanaugh (Port Washington, Wis./Port Washington) also broke the 25-minute mark. Dobbs finished 192nd with a collegiate-best 24:35.2, Niehueser recorded a season-best 24:37.4, good for 195th, and Cavanaugh placed 203rd in a personal-record 24:43.2.
 
Freshman Paige Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) rounded out the varsity seven, crossing the finish line in 25:02.2, good for 224th.
 
The Warhawks head to Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne, Wis., on Friday for the UW-Oshkosh Open. The men's race begins at 1 p.m., with the women's 6K to begin at 1:45 p.m.
