Cross Country Teams Continue Progress at UW-Eau Claire

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's cross country teams placed eighth and 18th, respectively, at the Blugold Invitational on Friday at Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax, Wis., site of this year's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships and NCAA Midwest Regional.
 
The men's team averaged a time of 26:08 to finish in the top third of the 29-team, 8-kilometer race.
 
Sophomore David Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) finished fifth out of 430 runners to lead the men in a season-best time of 24:52.9, only five seconds off his personal record pace.
 
Senior Jonah Nelson (Dodgeville, Wis./Dodgeville/Mineral Point) placed 39th with a mark of 26:02.3, and sophomore Kyle Neuroth (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) was close behind in 52nd with his time of 26:17.1.
 
Sophomore Conner Hackett (Darlington, Wis./Darlington) ran a 26:37.1 to place 77th, senior Braeden Michael (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) finished 90th after crossing the finish line in a personal-best 26:48.9 and junior Seth Zimdars (Ripon, Wis./Ripon) ran a career-best 26:57.9 to place 105th. Senior Jeremy Morgan (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park) rounded out the top seven with his 27:11.0, a career record and the 117th-best result in the race.
 
On the women's side, the Warhawks averaged a 25:25 in the 6-kilometer race, which included 25 teams.
 
Sophomore Jessie Braun led UW-Whitewater with a season-best 23:56.4, good for 72nd out of 327 racers. Senior Manda Slaback was second for the team with a 24:52.9, good for 141st, and sophomore Julia Fewell crossed the finish line in 25:07.8, good for 156th overall.
 
Sophomore Tiffany Bianco placed 225th in 26:24.8, and senior Elizabeth Considine finished in 26:43.0 to place 238th. Sophomore Jenny Kinjerski and junior Gabrielle Martin rounded out the top seven. Kinjerski placed 247th in 26:53.3, and Martin pushed to a result of 27:12.5, good for 257th.
 
Both teams return to action Oct. 13 at the Kollege Town Sports Invitational hosted by UW-Oshkosh at Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne, Wis., the site of the 2018 NCAA Championships. The women's race begins at 10:30 a.m., with the men's competition to follow at 11:15 a.m.
