The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater cross country teams opened the 2018 season Saturday by each placing second at the Tom Hoffman Invitational at the UW-Whitewater Cross Country Trail.
The Warhawk men finished as runner-up in their five-team field, while the women were second out of seven teams.
Sophomore
David Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) led the men with a first-place finish out of 74 runners in the 8-kilometer event. His time of 26:36.7 out-paced the field by more than 35 seconds.
Sophomore
Kyle Neuroth (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) crossed the finish line sixth with a 28:12.4. Seniors
Jonah Nelson (Dodgeville, Wis./Dodgeville/Mineral Point) and
Jeremy Morgan (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park) placed ninth and 10th, respectively. Nelson clocked a 28:34.9, while Morgan came in at 28:48.2.
Sophomore
Conner Hackett (Darlington, Wis./Darlington) finished 12th in 28:55.6, and junior
Seth Zimdars (Ripon, Wis./Ripon) registered a 29:13.2 to place 14th. Senior
Braeden Michael (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) rounded out the top seven with a 29:36.3.
On the women's side, sophomore Jessie Braun topped a field of 62 participants with her 24:49.9 in the 6-kilometer race, the lone sub 25-minute time in the race.
Senior Elizabeth Considine, freshman Julia Wesley and sophomore Julia Fewell finished in a pack at 15th, 16th and 17th, respectively. Considine crossed the finish line in 27:38.8, Wesley followed closely with a 27:41.0 and Fewell rounded out the group with her 27:48.3.
Junior Gabrielle Martin tallied a 28:41.7 to place 24th. Senior Manda Slaback collected a 29th-place finish in 28:55.4, and sophomore Tiffany Bianco capped the team's top seven with a 29:19.8, good for 32nd overall.
UW-Whitewater continues action Friday at the annual Brissman-Lundeen Invitational hosted by Augustana at Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Ill. The women's 6K is set for a 3 p.m. start, with the men's 8K to follow at 3:45 p.m.
