The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team topped a field of eight teams at the 48th annual Warhawk Invitational.
The tournament was played out at three indoor facilities – Janesville Athletic Club, Lake Geneva Tennis Club and Premier Tennis and Fitness – due to inclement weather in the Whitewater area.
The Warhawks collected 40 points to edge UW-Eau Claire, which finished second with 37.
Freshman
Olivia Kraft (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) won the No. 3 singles draw, and freshmen
Elsie Ha (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) and
Madalyn Bigelow (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) claimed the title in the third doubles bracket to lead UW-Whitewater. Kraft defeated UW-Eau Claire and Augustana (Ill.) in straight sets en route to the final, where she knocked off UW-La Crosse 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (13-11).
Ha and Bigelow bested UW-Oshkosh and Carthage before toppling sophomore
Katie Toomire (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) and freshman
Bryce Bigelow (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) in the final by an 8-5 score. Toomire and Bigelow were playing in place of Grinnell's No. 3 doubles pair.
Junior captain
Madeline Slicker (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) finished as runner-up at No. 2 singles with victories over Carthage and UW-La Crosse before a three-set loss against UW-Eau Claire in the championship match.
Third-place finishers for the Warhawks included senior
Julie Martin (Morton, Ill./Morton) in singles and the combinations of senior captain
Gabi Kitchell (Wausau, Wis./D.C. Everest) and freshman
Molly Rueth (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard West) in doubles. In the No. 1 singles draw, Martin bested UW-Eau Claire's No. 1 singles player, Natalie Wijesinghe, by a 6-4, 6-4 count in the third-place match to cap an impressive day.
Kitchell and Rueth were edged in a tiebreaker by UW-La Crosse in their semifinal at No. 1 doubles before recovering for an 8-3 triumph over UW-Eau Claire in the third-place match.
UW-Whitewater resumes action Sept. 15 at Wangerin Courts against UW-La Crosse at 9 a.m. and Carleton (Minn.) at 4 p.m.
