The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's track and field teams competed Friday on the first day of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships (Presented by Culver's) at UW-River Falls.
The Warhawk men are fifth with 16 points, while the women are in the same spot with 23 points.
Senior Brett Harms led the men with his third All-WIAC honor in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, placing second with a season-best 9:23.17.
Senior Matt Green and junior Dylan Ferger each scored in the long jump for the Warhawks with an identical mark of 22-09.75 (6.95 meters). Green placed sixth, while Ferger finished seventh.
Sophomore Alex Duff qualified first in both hurdles events, posting a 14.40 in the 110-meter hurdles and a 56.51 in the 400-meter hurdles.
Sophomore Christian Jackson qualified second in the 110 hurdles at 14.59, and senior Robert Martin placed ninth to reach Saturday's final with a 15.24.
Three others will join Duff in the 400 hurdles final. Junior Noah Verheyden placed fifth in 56.92, sophomore Joe Labs finished seventh with a 57.75 and sophomore Joe Bullis qualified eighth with a 57.77.
Senior Parker Witt qualified in each sprint event, placing second in the 100-meter dash (10.70) and third in the 200-meter dash (21.81). Sophomore Jake Schneider will join Witt in the 200 final after qualifying seventh with a 22.08.
Other qualifiers for finals included sophomore Alec Masters, who posted a 49.50 in the 400-meter dash, and freshman Brian Kuehl and senior Alec Meixelsperger, who qualified third and sixth, respectively, in the 800-meter run. Kuehl registered a 1:55.29, and Meixelsperger recorded a 1:56.22.
Sophomore Greg Hatzinger is seventh in the decathlon through five events with a score of 3123.
On the women's side, senior
Lindsay Chase (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) moved into the top five in the nation in the hammer throw with a school record and career-best toss of 188-02 (57.35 meters), good for second at the meet and her first career all-conference finish.
Freshman
Emery Podowicz (Clifton, Ill./Central) earned a fourth-place finish in the javelin throw with a personal-record 111-07 (34.01 meters), and placed seventh in the preliminary of the 400-meter hurdles in 1:08.39 to advance to Sunday's final.
Podowicz was joined on the podium in the javelin by sophomore
Lexi Ewing (Richland Center, Wis./Richland Center), who finished fifth with a career-best 111-01 (33.87 meters).
Freshman
Shelby Nickels (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln) placed fifth in the long jump to add points for UW-Whitewater with a 17-07.50 (5.37 meters). Junior
Liz Mielke (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) finished seventh in the 10,000-meter run with a 39:33.73.
The Warhawks qualified at least two in each of the three sprint events. Junior
Celeste Madda (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) led the way by reaching the 100- and 200-meter dash events with first-place times. She posted times of 12.07 in the 100 and 24.46 in the 200.
Madda will be joined by junior
Jordan Tokarski (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) in the 100, as Tokarski qualified ninth with a 12.58. Sophomore
Abbie Felton (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) qualified third in the 200 with her mark of 25.31.
Felton won the 400-meter dash prelims with her result of 56.79, and will be joined in Saturday's final by sophomore
Ashley Tijerina (West Chicago, Ill./West Chicago), who qualified fourth in 59.64 seconds, and senior
Enyo Amet (Racine, Wis./Prairie), who placed fifth in 1:00.57.
Through four events in the heptathlon, freshman
Abigail Missiaen (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) stands sixth with a score of 2386, and senior
Carly Manning (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) is eight at 2143.
Events continue Saturday with multis starting at 10 a.m. and all other events beginning at 11 a.m.
