The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team completed its regular season with a pair of victories at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Automatic Qualifier Tournament at home on Wangerin Courts Saturday afternoon. This was also Senior Day for the Warhawks as well, and the 11th straight team tournament championship in women's tennis.
The Warhawks (19-8), ranked 34th in the nation, knocked off UW-Oshkosh 6-0, before claiming their 11th consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament with a 6-0 victory over UW-Eau Claire (19-2). Both matches finished early by decision, and the Warhawk women have now won four straight duals without dropping a single match.
Against UW-Oshkosh (8-8), the Warhawk seniors took command early.
Bridgid McGuire (Slinger/Slinger) and
Jillian Wallace (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) lead the way on their Senior Day in the first doubles match with a 8-3 victory. The Warhawks continued to roll, with fellow senior
Alexandra Talyansky (Mequon/Homestead) and junior
Gabi Kitchell (Wausau, Wis./D.C. Everest) claiming the second doubles match 8-1. With a similar victory in the third slot, the Warhawks turned to singles. Freshman
Paige Nierman (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson) posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the fifth position to make it a 4-0 lead, senior
Kassie Alexander (Waukesha/South) clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-3 triumph at No. 6. Kitchell finished up soon to account for the final margin with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1.
The Warhawks moved onto the championship against UW-Eau Claire and continued to roll. McGuire and Wallace claimed the first doubles match in another 8-3 affair, leading the way as the Warhawks swept all three doubles matches. Talyansky put together the first victory in singles in the second slot, while her doubles partner Kitchell claimed another decisive victory in the first slot to clinch the dual and the championship for the Warhawks. Julie Martin (Morton, Ill./Morton) put the finishing touch on the afternoon in the fifth singles slot with a 7-5, 6-1 victory.
UW-Whitewater will be back on the courts May 11 to play in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The time and place of the team's first dual have not been announced. The full NCAA Championship field will be announced May 7 at 11 a.m. Central Time via press release on
