The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team won a pair of home duals Saturday, extending its home winning streak to nine.
The Warhawks (10-4) took down Wabash (Ind.) 6-3 in the first dual, before putting together an 8-1 performance against Illinois Tech in the nightcap.
Against Wabash (7-7), junior
Brandon Dechter (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic) and senior
Matt Zurowski (West Bend, Wis./East) took the No. 2 slot 8-1, while sophomores
Lucas Monterroso (Montevideo, Uruguay/Colegio Jesus Maria) and
Zach Wood (Downers Grove, Ill./South) won at the third position in a similar 8-1 fashion.
Monterroso and Wood started off singles with victories in the fifth and sixth slots, respectively, before Dechter claimed the clinching point for the dual in a 7-5, 6-3 battle in the third singles match. Zurowski rounded out the scoring with a victory at No. 4 singles.
The Warhawks continued their winning ways against Illinois Tech (8-7). With senior
Zane Navratil (Racine, Wis./The Prairie School) and junior
Jimmy Engelhart (Brookfield, Wis./East) leading the way at the first position, the team swept all three doubles matches. Dechter and Zurowski combined for an 8-0 triumph at No. 2, and Monterroso teamed with freshman
Robert Rider (Annapolis, Md./South River) for an 8-2 win at No. 3.
In singles, sophomore
Matthew Primozic (Elkhart Lake, Wis./Plymouth) claimed the No. 5 singles match before Wood clinched the dual for the Warhawks in the No. 4 slot. Zurowski claimed the final three games in his second set to claim another point for the Warhawks by a 6-2, 6-4 score at No. 3, and Dechter finished out the scoring for the match with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 2.
UW-Whitewater will be back in action on its Spring Trip to Hilton Head Island, S.C. The team will play its first match at 11 a.m. Central Time against Carleton (Minn.) next Saturday, March 24.
