The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team remained unbeaten at home on the season with wins Friday over Ohio Wesleyan and Wheaton (Ill.) at Premier Tennis and Fitness in Janesville.
The No 38 ranked Warhawks (5-2) downed both opponents on the day 7-2, winning every doubles match and dropping two singles matches to each team.
Against Ohio Wesleyan (0-1), the Warhawks started their doubles domination with senior
Zane Navratil (Racine, Wis./The Prairie School) and junior
Jimmy Engelhart (Brookfield, Wis./East) teaming up to take the number one match 8-4 over Diego Venegas and Jack Hibbard. The winning streak continued into the start of singles, with senior
Matt Zurowski (West Bend, Wis./East) claiming the number three slot in straight sets. Engelhardt fell in straight sets against Venegas in the no. 1 slot, but sophomore
Zach Wood (Downers Grove, Ill./South)clinched the match for the Warhawks 6-1, 7-5 over Alex Lutz.
In the afternoon dual versus Wheaton (Ill.) (0-1), the Warhawks continued their doubles streak. Senior
Grant Thompson (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich) and sophomore
Lucas Monterroso (Montevideo, Uruguay/Colegio Jesus Maria) led the way in the no. 3 slot, defeating Andrew Bristol and Josh Cheng 8-4. In singles, Monterroso and Wood clinched the match for the Warhawks in the no. 5 and 6 slots respectively.
Navratil dropped a tiebreaker match against Anderson Park 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10) to allow Wheaton's first win on the evening. Engelhart scored the last point of the day for the Warhawks in a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10) affair against Jeremiah Yi in the no. 3 singles spot.
The Warhawks look to defend their undefeated home record in Janesville Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against Grinnell (Iowa).
