University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's cross country sophomore David Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) earned All-America honors Saturday by placing 21st out of 280 runners at the NCAA Division III Championships at Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne, Wis.

Fassbender became the program's second All-American in the last decade with a time of 24:52.2, only 28 seconds off the winning pace. He averaged a mile time of just over five minutes, making his move near the 5.6-kilometer mark of the 8K race for his finish well within the top 35 needed to garner All-America accolades.

Fassbender's time was the fourth-best among Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competitors and the team's fastest at a national meet since Pat Frascone's 24:51.0 in 1999.

Fassbender capped a breakout 2018 campaign as a first team All-WIAC and All-Midwest Region runner, placing sixth at the conference championship and 10th at the regional race. He won the season-opening Tom Hoffman Invitational, placed second at the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational on Sept. 21 and finished fifth at the Blugold Invitational on Sept. 28.

At least one Warhawk runner has qualified for the NCAA Championship in each of the last five years.
