The No. 21 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater bowling team opened its 2018-19 season Friday with an impressive showing on the first day of McKendree's Bearcat Hammer Open at St. Clair Bowl in Fairview Heights, Ill.
 
The Warhawks tallied a 4-1 record in Baker games on the opening day of the three-day tournament, besting No. 2 McKendree 979-966 to start the run.
 
UW-Whitewater added a 942-876 triumph over Drury, a 1017-966 victory over No. 18 Central Missouri and a 964-853 win over No. 14 Lincoln Memorial. The team closed the day with a 1048-880 setback against top-ranked Vanderbilt.
 
The Warhawks are fifth out of 16 teams through five Baker games with a cumulative pinfall of 4,782, good for a 191.3 average.
 
Competition resumes Saturday with traditional games starting at 9 a.m.
