The UW-Whitewater women's track and field team placed fourth at the 2017 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, scoring 96 team points. UW-La Crosse won the team title with 172.50 points, followed by UW-Eau Claire (154.50 points) and UW-Stout (101.50 points). The Warhawk women placed fourth for the second consecutive WIAC outdoor championship and improved upon their total team score by six points over last season.

Senior Meredith Porter (Hales Corners, Wis./Whitnall) and sophomore Celeste Madda (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) each won a WIAC title on Saturday to lead the Warhawk women's team. Porter won the 400 meter hurdle title in 1:00.44, after setting a new WIAC meet record in the prelims on Friday (59.60). Her time set Friday currently puts her at No.2 in Division III. Madda won the 100 meter dash title in 12.13, and then went on to take second in the 200 meter dash in 24.70. Madda set career-best times in both events in the prelims on Friday, and is ranked in the top 15 in Division III in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Madda was also named to the Larry Zirgibel WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.

Also helping to propel the Warhawk women to their fourth place finish was senior Genny Rose Stringer (Assumption, Ill./Assumption), who placed second in the discus throw with a mark of 154-04 (47.05 meters) and still owns the No. 1 mark in Division III in the event, and the 4x100 relay squad of junior Chelsie Bence (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc), Madda, Abbie Felton (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran), and Porter, who placed third in 47.39, a time that vaults them to No. 11 in Division III in the event.

The Warhawk women also had a strong showing in the 400 meter dash on Saturday. Sophomore Abbie Felton (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) placed third in the event in 57.04, senior Leah Richter (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) followed up her WIAC pole vault title from yesterday to place fifth in 57.68, and sophomore Enyo Amet (Racine, Wis./Prairie) placed sixth in 57.93.

Other top finishes for the Warhawk women came from the 4x400 relay squad of Richter, freshman Ashley Tijerina (West Chicago, Ill./West Chicago), senior Tiffany Bianco (Brookfield, Wis./East), and Amet, who placed fifth in 3:58.13, freshman Sydney Rossow (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran), who placed sixth in the 100 meter hurdles in 15.27, and senior Amanda Strupp (Slinger, Wis./Slinger), who finished sixth in the discus throw with a mark of 138-04 (42.16 meters).

Up next, some of the Warhawk women's track and field team will travel to the Dr. Keeler Invitational at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois and the UW-La Crosse Eagle Open. The following weekend, some individuals will head back to North Central and La Crosse for a final opportunity to improve national qualifying times/marks.
