The No. 27 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team completed its 10th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Women's Championship Friday with a 5-3 setback against No. 21 Hope (Mich.) in the second round at Wangerin Courts.
The Warhawks (20-8 overall) collected two of the three doubles points to take a 2-1 advantage, but the Flying Dutch (20-3) took four of the first five singles contests to advance to Saturday's third round, where they'll play the winner of No. 10 Washington-St. Louis/John Carroll (Ohio).
Senior
Megan Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) and junior
Bridgid McGuire (Slinger/Slinger) posted an 8-0 shutout at No. 1 doubles to get UW-Whitewater on the board. After Hope took an 8-4 match at No. 3, the Warhawks' second duo of juniors
Alexandra Talyansky (Mequon/Homestead) and
Jillian Wallace (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) registered an 8-3 triumph heading into singles action.
Wallace tallied a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 4 to give UW-Whitewater a 3-1 advantage, but Hope took the next four completed matches in straight sets to emerge with the win.
Humphreys led 7-5, 4-3 before the remainder of her match at No. 1 was canceled after decision was reached.
Friday's match was the finale for senior
Rachel Siemon (Crystal Lake, IL/South), who competed at No. 3 doubles with junior
Alicia Beck (Bismarck, ND/St. Mary's Central). Siemon was a part of four Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships and NCAA appearances during her career.
Humphreys, also a senior, will compete with McGuire in the doubles draw at the NCAA Individual Championships, which is scheduled for May 25-27 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
