The No. 22 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team won one match and lost another against a pair of nationally ranked opponents Friday at the Midwest Invitational at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.
The Warhawks (16-5 overall) were edged 5-4 by No. 31 DePauw (Ind.) before downing Kenyon (Ohio) 5-4 in their second dual of the day.
In the second match, UW-Whitewater and Kenyon (6-8) split the six singles matches. Juniors
Alexandra Talyansky (Mequon/Homestead) and
Jillian Wallace (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) earned straight-set victories at Nos. 3 and 4 singles, respectively. Junior
Bridgid McGuire (Slinger/Slinger) contributed the other singles point with a 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (13-11) triumph at the second position.
Wallace and Talyansky collected the Warhawks' fourth point with an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles. The match came down to the top doubles slot, where McGuire and senior
Megan Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) combined for an 8-3 victory to clinch the match.
Against DePauw (8-4), Talyansky and Wallace combined to supply three of the team's four points. After the duo teamed up at No. 2 doubles for an 8-4 triumph, Wallace won a super tiebreaker to decide a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) win at No. 4 singles. Talyansky tallied a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 3.
Humphreys, competing at the No. 1 singles position, earned a 7-5, 6-0 result.
UW-Whitewater continues play at the tournament Saturday at 10 a.m. against 30th-ranked Denison (Ohio).
