Box Score 2 For the first time since 2009, the No. 13 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team finished with an unbeaten Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference record, completing the regular season Saturday with two victories at UW-Stout in a doubleheader in Menomonie, Wis.
The Warhawks (33-7 overall, 14-0 WIAC), who are the first conference team since 2010 to post an unblemished mark in league play during the regular season, downed the Blue Devils 8-0 in five innings in the opener before tallying a 6-1 triumph in the second game.
Freshman
Bella Matthias (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield) highlighted the day by tossing her second no-hitter of the season in the first game. The performance was Matthias' ninth shutout of the season and the team's 18th no-hitter in program history. She improved to 15-3 for the year and allowed only a pair of walks in the fourth inning while striking out eight.
UW-Whitewater scored seven runs in the top of the fifth inning to break the game open, and the contest ended by run rule after Matthias tossed a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth. Of the team's eight runs in the game, six were scored with two outs.
Junior left fielder
Mallory Klotz (New Berlin, Wis./West) collected three hits, including two doubles, and knocked in one run. Senior right fielder
Haley Morelli (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein), sophomore shortstop
Kelly Berglund (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) and freshman third baseman
Meg Cohrs (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) each registered two hits and one RBI, and sophomore centerfielder
Caitlin Catino (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) knocked in two runs with a double.
Senior first baseman
Amy Ricci (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) and freshman catcher
Nicole Neitzel (Verona, Wis./Verona Area) tallied one RBI apiece.
In Game 2, the Warhawks scored three in the first on a two-run double by Ricci and a sacrifice fly by junior second baseman
Michayla Swanson (Randolph, Wis./Randolph). They added three more in the third on an RBI single by Klotz, an RBI double by Catino and an error by UW-Stout (16-20, 5-7).
Sophomore
Julia Camardo (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) scattered seven hits and struck out five to improve to 10-2 for the season, allowing only one run in the bottom of the fifth.
Klotz and Catino posted two hits apiece to lead the offense.
UW-Whitewater opens WIAC Tournament play Friday at 2 p.m. at van Steenderen Softball Complex against the winner of the game between the Nos. 4 and 5 seeds.
