The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's tennis teams each competed in dual matches Wednesday as part of the programs' spring break trip to California.
The 24th-ranked men (8-7 overall) fell at Irvine Valley College (12-0) by a 7-2 score, while the No. 21 women (11-4) were defeated by 12th-ranked Tufts (3-0) in a 9-0 affair at Pomona-Pitzer in Claremont, Calif..
On the men's side, junior
Matt Zurowski (West Bend, Wis./East) and sophomore
Brandon Dechter (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic) combined for an 8-6 triumph at No. 3 doubles. The duo is now 5-3 playing together this season, including a 4-1 mark in dual matches.
Freshman
Lucas Monterroso (Montevideo, Uruguay/Colegio Jesus Maria) picked up his team-leading 13th singles victory of the season with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Jack Fryer at the No. 4 position.
For the women, senior
Megan Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) and junior
Jillian Wallace (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) played a closely contested match at No. 1 doubles, but were outlasted 9-7.
Both the men and the women conclude action in California Thursday.
The women will face No. 40 Oberlin (Ohio) at 11 a.m. Central Time at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Claremont, Calif., and return to action at 5 p.m. at Irvine Valley College.
The men will take on third-ranked Bowdoin (Maine) at 11 a.m. Central Time at CMS.
