The No. 11 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater bowling team opened its 2017-18 season with five Baker games Friday at McKendree's Brunswick Bearcat Open at St. Clair Bowl in Fairview Heights, Ill.
 
The Warhawks fell against defending national champion and top-ranked McKendree by a 941-850 score before rebounding for a 982-918 triumph over 13th-ranked Monmouth (N.J.).
 
UW-Whitewater dropped its final three matches of the day against No. 3 Arkansas State (967-803), No. 20 Prairie View A&M (929-916) and Maryville (919-838).
 
The Warhawks are scheduled to play five traditional matches Saturday, starting with sixth-ranked Stephen F. Austin.
